NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick has explained why Keelan Harvick joined Toyota Racing Development, confirming a major step in his son’s early racing career. The 13-year-old driver recently entered a long-term partnership with the manufacturer’s driver development program.
The agreement marks the first formal manufacturer relationship for the young racer as he continues to move through the early stages of stock car competition.
The decision became public on February 23, 2026, when Toyota Racing Development confirmed the partnership. The deal places Keelan inside one of the most established development systems in NASCAR.
Kevin Harvick said the move followed months of discussions about the next step in Keelan’s racing path. The 2014 Cup Series champion explained that the people and structure within Toyota’s program played a major role in the choice.
Why Keelan Harvick Joined Toyota Racing Development
Kevin Harvick said the family spent about eight months discussing the direction of Keelan’s racing future. During that time, they considered the available options and which environment would best support his development.
“Well, I think the choice was pretty simple. It’s been a conversation that we’ve been having for the last eight months about what the direction was going to be and what was best for him.”
Harvick said the support system within the manufacturer’s program made a strong impression.
“It’s just a great group of people with the resources and the structure. Their development program is really unmatched. So I think for Keelan to be able to have that path and for us as parents to be able to have that partnership with a group of people you can work with together is important to us.”
Toyota Racing Development has built a structured driver pipeline within NASCAR. The program provides technical support, engineering guidance, and simulator work for young drivers as they develop their racing skills.
Keelan Harvick Begins His Path in Late Model Racing
Keelan Harvick has already started gaining experience in Late Model competition. At 13 years old, he has competed in both Pro Late Models and Super Late Models while continuing to build track time.
Kevin Harvick said the transition has required patience as Keelan adapts to the different style of racing.
“He’s done a great job just learning. I think the Supers have been a challenge. That’s what we’re looking for, just with the power, managing the car, the brakes and all the things that you don’t get out of the Pro Late Models. Each car has it’s own characteristics. I think that the Pro Late Model and the Super are different because of the power. The Late Model Stock is different because it’s heavy and doesn’t have very good brakes but still has a little bit more power than the Pros. We try to pick the right tracks and series to just keep the learning curve going.”
He explained that the focus at this stage is not only on finishing positions but on understanding the car and improving each time on track.
“Sometimes it’s about what we learn today that we can do better next time? It’s been a challenge for him, and he’s done well here last time, and I think this is his third race in the Super, so he still has a lot to learn. But that’s why we’re here.”
Kevin Harvick Focuses on Development and Character
Kevin Harvick said the decision about why Keelan Harvick joined Toyota Racing Development involved more than just racing performance. He also looked for an environment that supports young drivers as they mature.
“We want him to be fast but you also want to raise a good human and I think that their culture is going to be good for him.”
Toyota Racing Development president Tyler Gibbs also commented when the partnership was announced. He pointed to Keelan’s approach to racing and his work ethic at a young age.
For now, the goal remains to gain experience and build the skills needed to move forward on the NASCAR development ladder.
