LeBron James will forever be interlinked with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’s a hometown hero, and a former champion with the franchise.
Now, as LeBron nears the end of his historic career, and his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers has begun to look shaky, rumors have begun to surface, linking him with one final run with the Cavaliers.
In a July 23 article for Bleacher Report, Greg Swartz proposed a four-team trade that would land LeBron back in “The Land” for a third time. The proposed trade looks like this:
Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: LeBron James, Bronny James and a 2027 first-round pick (top-2 protected from Dallas Mavericks, via Hornets)
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Darius Garland, Max Strus
Charlotte Hornets Receive: Jarrett Allen
Brooklyn Nets Receive: Grant Williams, Dean Wade and a 2027 first-round pick (lottery-protected from Miami Heat, via Hornets)
“For the Cavs, this means leaning into the idea of playing Evan Mobley as the new starting center,” Swartz reasoned. “Cleveland had a net rating of plus-12.0 with Mobley at the five last season, ranking in the 95th percentile. Swapping Allen out allows the Cavs to keep De’Andre Hunter and pick up a future first-round pick they can use to add young talent or flip in a future trade. The Cavaliers would then have $7.6 million left to sign three players.”
While it’s unlikely a deal of this magnitude would occur for a 40-year-old version of LeBron, the idea can’t be ruled out. After all, LeBron would instantly give the Cavaliers a boost in their search for a championship. His experience and offensive production could anchor Kenny Atkinson’s team during the 2026 NBA playoffs.
NBA Insider Shoots Down LeBron to Cavaliers Idea
During a recent appearance on ESPN Cleveland, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst shot down the notion of LeBron returning to the Cavaliers.
“And if the Lakers are trading LeBron James, they’re going to want really good stuff for it,” Windhorst said. “With a straight face, I can’t say that it’s impossible, but you have to understand, they can’t feasibly trade for him.”
Windhorst is speaking logically. It is unlikely we will see LeBron return to his hometown team this season. Nevertheless, we’ve learned to never say never when it comes to shocking NBA trades. And, given the Lakers’ desire to rebuild around Luka Doncic, a LeBron exit may not be as far-fetched as it sounds.
NBA Scout Doubts Cavaliers Want LeBron
During a recent conversation with Sam Amico of HoopsWire, an anonymous NBA scout detailed why LeBron is unlikely to return to Cleveland.
“I keep hearing their interest is minimal, if they have any at all,” The scout told Amico. “So I’m not even sure where that report originated. Who’s the source on it? Rich Paul’s cleaning lady?… I don’t think 40-year-old LeBron is the target. He’s still very good most nights, at least offensively, but it doesn’t work for about a thousand reasons. And you can start with the fact he’s under contract for like 53 million bucks.”
Koby Altman has built a strong roster in Cleveland. It’s unlikely he would begin tearing that down in order to add an aging veteran. So, unless LeBron hits the buyout market or becomes a free agent next summer, a return to Cleveland will likely remain a pipe dream, regardless of how poetic it would be for him to end his career, and potentially win one more chip, in front of a hometown crowd.
