The Los Angeles Lakers’ season has taken a dramatic turn over the past week, with injuries severely impacting the roster at the worst possible time.
Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have both been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season, with their availability for the postseason still uncertain.
Prior to the injuries, the Lakers had been building strong momentum, winning 16 of their last 19 games. However, they have since dropped three straight as the regular season nears its conclusion.
Now sitting at 50-29 and sliding to fourth in the Western Conference, with the possibility of falling further, the focus has shifted to limiting the damage ahead of the playoffs.
Lakers Turn to Young Core as Injuries Force Rotation Changes
Marcus Smart has remained a constant presence on the injury report in recent weeks, while LeBron James and Jaxson Hayes were also sidelined during Tuesday’s heavy loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
As a result, the Lakers were forced to lean on fringe rotation players, including Drew Timme, Bronny James, Adou Thiero, Kobe Bufkin, Dalton Knecht, Chris Manon, and Nick Smith Jr., all of whom logged double-digit minutes in the defeat.
Among them, Thiero stands out as a particularly intriguing prospect.
The Lakers have taken a cautious approach with the rookie throughout the season following offseason knee surgery, as well as a MCL sprain that sidelined him through January.
Lakers Nation reporter Trevor Lane believes the Lakers should now prioritize Thiero’s development over the final stretch of the season.
“Adou Thiero is the most important young player on the Lakers’ roster, and it’s not even close,” Lane said. “He’s more important than Bronny James, more important than Dalton Knecht, and his development must be a priority. He moves differently than everyone else out there.”
“The investment, it is well worth it. Adou Thiero would become the most valuable archetype you can have of role players in the NBA, if the Lakers can get him to hit.”
Lane continued by describing Thiero as an “uber athletic, multi-position defensive player,” with the potential to grow into a reliable offensive contributor.
Adou Thiero Showing Flashes of Potential Amid Expanded Opportunity
Through 22 NBA appearances this season, Thiero has averaged 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds in just 5.8 minutes per game.
His development has been disrupted by multiple injuries during his rookie campaign. However, against the Thunder, the 21-year-old logged a season-high 20 minutes off the bench.
He responded with a season-best 10 points, along with four rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while shooting 2-of-4 from the field and connecting on a three-pointer, offering a glimpse of his two-way upside.
In recent months, Thiero has also seen consistent action with the South Bay Lakers, continuing his development at the G League level.
Across 10 games for South Bay, the 6-foot-7 forward averaged 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks, while shooting an efficient 60.4% from the field.
Notably, he has also shown signs of perimeter growth, converting 10 of his 20 attempts from three-point range.
Although the sample size remains limited, he has flashed the athleticism and defensive versatility that made him an intriguing second-round selection in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Just as encouraging, he has averaged only one turnover per game in the G League, including four error-free outings, highlighting promising decision-making for a developing rookie.
With the Lakers navigating a difficult stretch, the final games of the regular season could provide Thiero with a valuable opportunity to accelerate his development and make a case for a larger role moving forward.
