LeBron James would likely need to take a pay cut in order to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers or join the Cleveland Cavaliers per new rumors.

The future of LeBron James with the Los Angeles Lakers has been in question for the entire season since he picked up his player option with the team, set to become a free agent this summer.

While the initial comments from his agent, Rich Paul, signaled that his time with the team could be coming to an end, recent reports are only fueling the fire that James will be leaving the Lakers after this season.

The latest news is only further evidence that the relationship between the league’s all-time leading scorer at the most famous team in the NBA is coming to an end after this season. According to insider Jake Fischer, the Lakers areready to move onfrom James, as is he with them.

“The Lakers are ready to move on from LeBron James and I think LeBron James is ready to move on from the Lakers as well,Fischer said on his YouTube show. That’s kind of the foregone sentiment in Los Angeles right now about what’s to come this summer.”

The insider added that the Lakers are ready to move forward with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, using their available cap space over the summer to add young players who better fit with that star duo.

LeBron James Lakers Future

As mentioned, questions about James’ future with the Lakers began when he picked up his player option, and Paul gave an ominous interview with Shams Charania.

“He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career,Paul told ESPN.We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career.”

Since then, questions about James’ next move, which could potentially include retirement, led NBA headlines until the news of Giannis Antetokounmpo wanting out of the Milwaukee Bucks surfaced.

However, with his acumen across the league, the prospect of James becoming a free agent and becoming available this summer is an enticing idea for every other team outside of Los Angeles.

While all the previous speculation was just that, Charania himself gave another update on James’ future with the Lakers. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show in late January, the insider said that the relationship between the player and the team is coming to an end.

“The reality of what we have right here is the end of a relationship in terms of LeBron James and the Lakers,” Charania said, per ESPN.com.Whether that comes at the end of this season if LeBron James decides as a free agent to sign somewhere else or he decides to retire or he decides to come back for one more year and decide he wants to retire as a Laker…The end is near however you wanna slice it.”

Rumors on retirement have since taken center stage regarding any of James’ plans, as while he hasn’t said anything directly, the four-time Finals MVP continues state that things will eventually come to an end.

That leaves us with Fischer’s latest report. All the signs signaled that things were winding down between the player and franchise, but there’s been no reporting to hint otherwise. Whether he leaves the Lakers to join another team or chooses to retire, there is no indication that James will return to Los Angeles after this season.

Lakers Trade Rumors

James is one issue, but the future of the franchise is another. Reaves is the other big agent the Lakers will have to decide on, but there is the expectation that they will sign him to a near-max contract this offseason.

Additionally, Los Angeles has been linked to several big-name players amid this NBA trade cycle, but with just days before the February 5th trade deadline, they haven’t made any moves yet.

They’ve appeared to strike out on top targets like Herb Jones, Jonathan Kuminga, and the recently traded DeAndre Hunter and Keon Ellis, leaving them with not a lot of options in terms of roster moves in the next few days.

Instead, they’ve been linked to big men like Robert Williams, Daniel Gafford, and a few others to help sure up what has been an overall poor interior defense this season, led by current center Deandre Ayton

There were brief hopes of the Lakers landing Antetokounmpo, but according to Charania and other insiders, they aren’t expected to be a top suitor, whether that be at the trade deadline or the offseason.

After stating the Lakers failed to land Ellis in a deal, Fischer said he believes that was an indicator that they aren’t going to be super aggressive at the deadline, and instead target players like Peyton Watson, Benedict Mathurin, Tari Eason, and others once James is gone this offseason, when they’ll have more cap space flexibility.
