The Minnesota Timberwolves have been busy this offseason in an attempt to get over the hump and win the NBA Finals. Whether or not their work over the past few months has actually made this team better is still up for debate, but there’s no doubt that the Timberwolves are going to be an exciting team to watch in the 2026-27 campaign.
Last offseason, the Timberwolves were experiencing change at the top level of their organization, as Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez officially became the controlling owners of the team in June 2025. Just over a full year later, though, Lore has sold his controlling share of the franchise to American business leader Marc Stad, with the deal being worth a whopping $4.5 billion.
Timberwolves Get Sold Once Again, This Time for $4.5 Billion
The process of Lore and Rodriguez becoming the Timberwolves’ majority owners was long and complicated. Initially, the team’s previous owner, Glen Taylor, agreed to sell his majority stake to Lore and Rodriguez, but after changing his mind, that kickstarted a long and winding road that eventually led to him parting ways with the team.
For all intents and purposes, things had gone well since the sale was finalized last year. Minnesota posted a 49-33 record in the 2025-26 campaign and ended up going on another playoff run, where they bowed out in the Western Conference semifinals. A big move for LaMelo Ball this offseason has inspired hope that he and Anthony Edwards could take the team to another level, though.
We just saw the Los Angeles Lakers change hands for the second time in the span of only a few months, and now, the Timberwolves will be following suit. Out of nowhere, it was revealed that Lore’s $4.5 billion stake would be getting sold to Shad, making him the new controlling owner of the franchise ahead of the upcoming season.
“American business leader Marc Stad has completed a deal to become the controlling owner and largest shareholder of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx by buying the majority of co-owner Marc Lore’s stake at a $4.5 billion valuation, sources tell ESPN,” Shams Charania of ESPN reported in a post on X.

To say this move is a shock would be an understatement. Again, Lore and Rodriguez’s deal to become the Timberwolves’ majority owners was only finalized last year, and considering how much work they had to go through to pry the team away from Taylor, the overarching assumption was that they would remain with the team for quite some time.
Instead, Shad is set to take over at the top of the food chain, which could result in some sweeping changes being made across the organization. In the immediate future, not much will change for the Timberwolves, but it will be worth keeping tabs on this team in the upcoming campaign, as its success could determine just how the offseason unfolds next year.
