On Thursday, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow put the organization on notice with some interesting comments.
Burrow stepped up to the podium, delivering a strong message on his expectations for the upcoming 2026 season.
“I’m trying to put it out into the world. I’m trying to manifest it. You can keep pushing it down the road, or you can talk about it now. I’m tired of saying ‘next year, next year, next year.’ This is it.”
“We have to step up and make something happen this year. We’re working really hard for it. The urgency is very high in the locker room. You can feel it. It’s palpable. As I said, we have to be more consistent on offense,” Burrow said. “Our standard is so high, but it’s so high because of what we’ve done and what we can do, and so I’m going to continue to push that, and we’re going to keep getting better and see where we’re at Week 1. But I’m so excited for it.”
Following the comments, the worst fears of the Bengals have come to life. Burrow potentially leaving the organization would be catastrophic for Cincinnati, so the pressure is fully on this team coming into the season.
Cincinnati added multiple veteran pieces to the roster this offseason, giving themselves a better shot to win. But it seems that Burrow may be looking at 2026 as “the” year for the Bengals to finally win.
Joe Burrow Gets Carson Palmer Comparison
Following the comments from Burrow, NFL analyst Mike Florio discussed the Bengals on a recent “Pro Football Talk” episode. Within, Florio compared Burrow to a former Bengals quarterback: Carson Palmer.
“I think Joe Burrow is coming very close to the Carson Palmer realization that it’s never going to happen for me in Cincinnati, and it took Palmer eight years to get there,” Florio said. “This is year seven for Joe Burrow. If they don’t make it to the playoffs this year, at a minimum, they’re going to fire Zac Taylor, and they’re going to say to Joe Burrow, ‘Who do you want us to hire?’ That’s at a minimum, but that may not even be enough.”
Since Burrow was drafted, he has received comparisons to Palmer, who left the Bengals disgruntled after multiple seasons at the helm. But to this point, Burrow hasn’t asked out of the team, like Palmer eventually did.
However, Burrow does seem to be entering the 2026 season with a heightened sense of urgency, and if the team can’t deliver, changes could be coming.
“Is it ever going to get fixed in Cincinnati? … This is why (Carson Palmer) left,” Florio said. “When you prioritize making money over winning, you’ve already lost. Where is the evidence that the Bengals are prioritizing winning? Have we ever seen any evidence? They’re prioritizing placating Joe Burrow because he’s their meal ticket.”
Will Joe Burrow Leave the Bengals After 2026?
Burrow isn’t the type of player to come out and say that he wants out. But his actions and words are speaking volumes entering the 2026 season.
The Bengals have missed the playoffs in three straight years, and the team has received all sorts of hype coming into the season. This is the team that Cincinnati believes in, and it’s make-or-break time for the organization.
Cincinnati has all the pieces in place to again be a Super Bowl contender, but the team will have to prove itself on the field. And if they don’t, they may lose more than just another wasted season.
