Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the media on Monday, August 18, and he revealed a serious preseason injury that was suffered by former first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah.

“Andy Reid says [defensive end] Felix Anudike-Uzomah is expected to land on injured reserve today with a hamstring injury,” Chiefs Digest beat reporter Matt Derrick relayed on X. Adding: “If so, that would end his season.”

This injury update from Reid was also reported by ESPN’s Nate Taylor, who referred to it as a “hamstring strain” for Anudike-Uzomah.

“Yeah, that’s a tough thing. He’s worked hard, so we’ll see where it goes,” a melancholy Reid said on Monday, regarding Anudike-Uzomah’s expected recovery timeline and the possibility of a season-ending injury. “I can’t tell you how long it’s going to be. But any time for that is disappointing for him, I know, because he works so stinking hard.”

Along with Anudike-Uzomah, Reid listed the following injured players who won’t be practicing on August 18. They were LB Jack Cochrane (knee/bone bruise), OT Ethan Driskell (undisclosed), S Mike Edwards (hamstring strain), CB Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder strain), DT Omarr Norman-Lott (ankle sprain), and WR Jalen Royals (knee tendonitis).

Felix Anudike-Uzomah Suffers Major Injury at Worst Possible Time

It’s never a good time to suffer a season-ending injury, but this is undoubtedly one of the worst possible moments that Anudike-Uzomah could have been dealt this cruel twist of fate heading into his third NFL season.

It’s been a tough first two years for the first-round pass rusher, and year three profiled as his make-or-break campaign with a fifth-year option decision looming next May. If Anudike-Uzomah does indeed miss the entire 2025 season, as feared, there’s little doubt that the Chiefs will decline his fifth-year option based on his body of work over the past two seasons.

Appearing in all 34 regular season games from 2023 through 2024, Anudike-Uzomah has only been credited with 3.0 sacks and 8 tackles for a loss. He has also recorded 14 QB hits, 2 forced fumbles and 41 total tackles.

In the playoffs, Anudike-Uzomah added 1.0 sack, 1 QB hit and 4 tackles for a loss over 4 postseason appearances.

At times, Anudike-Uzomah has served as a solid rotational defensive end, but he’s yet to flash the way the Chiefs expected when they spent the 31st overall pick on him in 2023. He’ll still have one season remaining on his rookie contract in 2026, even if KC declines his fifth-year option.

But at that point, Anudike-Uzomah will either be auditioning for free agency or a team-friendly extension.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid Announces Starters Will Play in Preseason Week 3

Reid was also asked about the likelihood of him playing the starters in the third preseason game on August 22.

“They’ll start it off for sure,” Reid responded. Adding: “We’ll see how it goes from there.”

Reid sat key starters like Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones and Travis Kelce during the second preseason outing of the summer. The result was not pretty, not that anyone keeps track of preseason records at the end of the day.

This time, it appears the Chiefs are planning to operate more similarly to the preseason opener, where Mahomes and the starters got a very brief amount of action. Don’t expect them to be on the field for a long time, but Kansas City’s starters will likely get another drive or two of reps during the preseason finale.
