One Team Could Make a Desperate Trade Attempt for Raiders’ Star

The New York Jets could be serious trade suitors for Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.

The New York Jets are searching for help in their wide receiver room, and one intriguing name has surfaced as a potential target: Las Vegas Raiders wideout Jakobi Meyers.

According to multiple reports, Meyers has requested a trade after failing to reach a long-term agreement with the Raiders, and the Jets have been linked as a possible suitor.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini noted that outside of star Garrett Wilson, the Jets’ receiving corps leaves much to be desired. Veterans Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, and Xavier Gipson are experienced but inconsistent, combining for only four career 100-yard games, each coming from just Lazard. That lack of production could push the Jets to make a desperate trade, where Meyers is viewed as the cream of the crop out of the potential options that are available.

Adding to the intrigue, Jets passing game coordinator Scott Turner coached Meyers in Las Vegas last season and has openly praised him. “I tell people all the time, he’s one of my favorite players that I’ve ever coached,” Turner said in December. That familiarity could make New York an attractive landing spot if the Raiders decide to listen to offers.

Why Jakobi Meyers Makes Sense for the Jets

The Jets‘ interest in acquiring another pass catcher isn’t just speculation. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on August 20th that the Jets are among several teams “monitoring the trade market for potential wide receiver additions.” With quarterback Justin Fields entering his first season in New York, the organization has every reason to want to surround him with more talent.

Meyers, 28, is coming off the best season of his career. In 2024, he caught 87 passes for 1,027 yards and four touchdowns despite shaky quarterback play in Las Vegas. His ability to consistently move the chains (52 of his catches went for first downs) would provide Fields with a reliable security blanket.

Financially, the Jets could also make it work. Meyers is in the final year of his three-year, $33 million contract, carrying a base salary of $10.5 million in 2025. While he’s seeking a raise, the Jets might view this as a worthwhile investment given their current roster construction. Pairing him with Wilson would give Fields one of the more underrated receiving tandems in the NFL.

Raiders’ Stance and Jets’ Level of Urgency

There’s one complication for the Jets: the Raiders reportedly have no plans to move Meyers despite his trade request, and rightfully so.

They value him, especially with an unproven group behind him that includes Tre Tucker and rookies Dont’e Thornton Jr. and Jack Bech. Las Vegas has also seen Meyers develop early chemistry with new quarterback Geno Smith, which could make them even more reluctant to let him go.

If the Jets really want Meyers, they might give the Raiders an offer they can’t refuse. Given Meyers’ value and importance to the team, it would likely have to be at least a second-round pick to grab the Raiders‘ attention. The Jets might even have to add a player in the trade package.

It’s a big price, but if the Jets are serious about giving Fields another reliable weapon, then that might be the price they have to pay.

Ultimately, the Raiders hold the cards, but the Jets may have a genuine interest in trading for Meyers.
