A lot of NFL pundits are still waiting to see if the New England Patriots make a bigger move this offseason for their edge rushing room or wide receiver group. But when addressing the team’s biggest need, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell went in a different direction, posing veteran Calais Campbell a potential target.
On Wednesday, Barnwell identified defensive line depth as “what’s missing” from New England’s roster. With that in mind, he mentioned Campbell, along with two other veteran defensive linemen, as a possible addition.
“The Patriots don’t project to land any compensatory picks, so they don’t need to stress about holding off on veteran talent until June 1,” Barnwell wrote. “There are still solid players who can play rotational roles available, including players such as DJ Reader, Shelby Harris and even 39-year-old legend Calais Campbell, who might feel like it’s worth heading to New England to potentially chase a ring.”
All three linemen would be quality additions in their own right. Campbell, though, would probably bring the most headlines because of his miraculous career.
Campbell, who will turn 40 years old before Week 1, will enter his 19th NFL season in 2026. He’s started 259 games in his career, including every contest over the past three campaigns.
Last season, Campbell posted 43 combined tackles, including nine tackles for loss with the Arizona Cardinals. He also had 6.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits and two pass defenses.
Why Calais Campbell Could Fit With Patriots
Pundits have kept connecting the Patriots to wide receiver A.J. Brown and edge rusher Maxx Crosby this week. That’s likely to continue until those two players have new teams.
But the Patriots have addressed those areas of their roster. New England signed Romeo Doubs to a 4-year, $68 million contract. The team also added edge rusher Dre’Mont Jones on a 3-year contract worth $36.5 million.
But the Patriots haven’t signed a new defensive lineman. In NFL free agency, they lost veteran interior lineman Khyiris Tonga to the Kansas City Chiefs.
That’s why Barnwell suggested New England as a suitor for Campbell and other defensive linemen.
Campbell has played both defensive end and defensive tackle throughout his long NFL career. Playing 18 seasons in the league as a lineman is an incredible feat.
In his prime, Campbell was elite too. From 2014-20, he made six Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams. During 2017, he finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting to Aaron Donald and made first-team All-Pro.
Over 18 years, Campbell has earned 117 sacks, 196 tackles for loss and 282 quarterback hits.
Turning 40 in September, the Patriots wouldn’t be getting that version of Campbell. But he contributed 6.5 sacks while playing 524 defensive snaps last season. Campbell lined up for 46% of Arizona’s snaps on defense.
He’s a short-term option for any team looking for strong, experienced defensive line depth. In return, the Patriots can provide Campbell an opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl.
Campbell played in the big game as a rookie but hasn’t been back since then.
Patriots Defensive Line Depth in 2026 NFL Offseason
The good news with the Patriots defensive line is they are bringing back Christian Barmore, Milton Williams and Cory Durden. Those three played more defensive snaps than Tonga did in 2025.
No defensive lineman played more than those three for New England last season.
But head coach Mike Vrabel used a deep defensive line rotation in 2025. Only Barmore played more than 42% of the team’s defensive snaps along the line.
That proves Barnwell’s overall point that New England needs more defensive line depth before the 2026 season. The team uses that depth more than other defenses.
The Patriots also have Joshua Farmer, Eric Gregory, Jeremiah Pharms Jr. and Leonard Taylor III on their official offseason roster as defensive linemen.
