The New York Giants have made a potentially massive addition to their offensive staff, with The Athletic’s Charlotte Carroll reporting that John Harbaugh is bringing former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman aboard.

Carroll didn’t specify what role exactly Roman will be serving on the Giants‘ staff, but SNY’s Connor Hughes expects the former Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator to oversee the run game.

Roman had interviewed with the New York Jets for their vacant offensive coordinator position before the team ultimately landed on Frank Reich.

Hughes noted that he was still in talks to join Reich’s Jets staff, but it seems Roman decided he’d rather reunite with John Harbaugh for the second time in his career.

Greg Roman’s Ties to the Harbaugh Brothers

Funny enough, this will be the fourth time in Roman’s career that he’ll be serving on a Harbaugh brothers’ staff, but it’s certainly his first stint with the New York Giants.

Roman served as Jim Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014 and was the Los Angeles Chargers’ OC for the past two seasons.

He was also the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022.

Roman’s strength is his ability to scheme an effective ground game.

From 2019 to 2022, the Ravens never finished lower than third in rushing yards per game. Of course, it’s easy to attribute that to two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, who is arguably the greatest dual-threat quarterback the game has ever seen.

More impressively, the Chargers were 12th in the league this past season in rushing yards per game, despite Los Angeles missing first-round running back Omarion Hampton for half of the season and All-Pro caliber offensive tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt for a good majority of 2025.

Roman’s ability to find efficient rushing methods with mostly backups is quite the feather in his cap.

If Roman is serving as the Giants’ run game coordinator, that’s certainly the role he’s best suited for. He was fired this past season by Los Angeles for their lack of a consistent threat in the passing game.

Matt Nagy will mostly be running the show on offense, but having Roman’s input will certainly be a boost to Harbaugh’s staff.

How’s the Giants’ Offensive Staff Looking?

Harbaugh has done quite a job filling out the New York Giants offensive staff, but there’s still more work to be done.

Of course, Nagy will be the offensive coordinator. Harbaugh has also brought along running backs coach Willie Taggart and offensive quality control coach Adam Schrak from the Baltimore Ravens.

There’s also some holdovers from Brian Daboll’s offensive staff, including wide receivers coach Chad Hall and tight ends coach Tim Kelly.

Harbaugh has yet to hire a quarterbacks coach and offensive line coach, while Roman expects to fill the run game coordinator position.

The staff has a wide range of experience, with many having worked with Harbaugh before.

It will be interesting to see who he hires to coach his quarterbacks, or if Nagy has someone in mind he would like to assist in developing hopeful franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart.
