The New York Giants are in the process of changing their coaching staff, but their core of young players should remain the same, and quarterback Jaxson Dart and running back Cam Skattebo are a major part of that core heading into 2026.
Although the 2025 season didn’t go as planned, Skattebo — who has been on the injured reserve since Week 8 — sent a parting message to fans on locker room cleanout day, and it revolved around Dart and the future.
“I’m excited to build something here,” Skattebo told reporters on January 5, via The Athletic’s Charlotte Carroll. Adding: “No matter who is in this building, we have our quarterback.”
That unwavering confidence in Dart is one of the main reasons that the Giants community as a whole is somewhat optimistic. As Skattebo stated very clearly, the QB issue is solved, and the rest should fall into place if that’s true.
First things first, Giants general manager Joe Schoen will be tasked with hiring a new head coach, and the assumption is that said HC will build out a totally new staff underneath him.
Plenty of changes are coming to the Big Blue organization over the next couple of months, but players like Dart and Skattebo should be the constants. The new core starts with them, Malik Nabers, Abdul Carter and Brian Burns, among others, and this new leadership group must help reshape the Giants’ culture.
Giants RB Cam Skattebo Gets Real About 2025 Record & Brian Daboll News
Skattebo was asked about more than just the future, and the fan favorite rookie provided pretty honest answers on each topic that he was questioned on. The first being his personality and popularity among fans.
“[The fan support] was awesome,” Skattebo said, via SNY Giants. “Everywhere I’ve been, I’ve kind of been the rah-rah just because I’m loud and obnoxious. But… we still went 4-13. If you’re the face of the franchise and you’re not a good franchise, then there’s still an issue. It’s not that big of a deal. But if I’m the face of the franchise when we’re winning the Super Bowl, then you can ask me that question in a year or two.”
At the end of the day, that’s a very mature response from a first-year player. Skattebo appreciates the love, but he understands that being loved by fans only goes so far when you don’t get the job done as a team.
His main goal seems to be to correct that issue, similar to his QB, Dart.
As for former head coach Brian Daboll, Skattebo wasn’t willing to speak poorly of him on his way out the door. When asked about Daboll being fired, the passionate running back said he preferred not to comment on that.
Explaining: “I love Dabes. He was a great guy, he was a great coach. He gave me the opportunity to be here, and he’s somebody that I’m always going to look up to. [Daboll] was my first coach in the NFL, and he taught me a lot about football.”
Skattebo concluded that he’ll remain “in contact” with Daboll on a personal level, but noted that he’s also “excited” for the Giants’ future.
Cam Skattebo & Jaxson Dart Flashed Franchise-Changing Potential in 2025

GettyNew York Giants rookies Jaxson Dart (#6) and Cam Skattebo (#44) celebrate a touchdown in 2025.
Dart and Skattebo weren’t perfect in their rookie seasons, but they flashed a similar type of potential as Nabers the year before. Honestly speaking, draft hits like these three are a big part of why Schoen retained his GM role.
Skattebo didn’t begin as the day one starting running back, but it didn’t take long for him to seize the job from Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary.
The intriguing part about Skattebo’s game is his three-down potential. He rushed for 4.1 yards per carry as a rookie, but he also caught 24 of his 32 targets for 207 receiving yards.
On top of that, Skattebo found his way into the end zone 7 total times in just 8 games, contributing 38 first downs.
The offense struggled a bit without Skattebo down the stretch, and Dart had a few off-games without his partner-in-crime, too. Simply put, the 2025 fourth-round pick just seemed to add a new element to the Giants’ offense.
