The battle of attrition has begun for the New York Jets heading into Week 3.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shared the Jets‘ first injury report ahead of their road trip to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Lengthy Jets injury report,” Rosenblatt said on Wednesday, September 17.
11 players appeared for the Jets in some form or fashion.
Laundry List of Jets Players Who Didn’t Practice
Seven players did not practice for the Jets on Wednesday, September 17. Six of those seven are starters and/or full-time players.
That group includes quarterback Justin Fields (concussion), wide receiver Josh Reynolds (hamstring), running back Kene Nwangwu (hamstring), safety Tony Adams (hip), cornerback Michael Carter II (shoulder), and pass rusher Jermaine Johnson (ankle).
The other player is defensive tackle Jay Tufele, who continues to battle an illness. He missed all of practice last week and wasn’t available for Week 2.
There is good news and bad news. The good news is that only one player from this group has already been ruled out for Week 3. The bad news is it’s the Jets‘ starting quarterback.
Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that Fields wouldn’t suit up this week as he works his way through the NFL’s concussion protocol. Instead, the Jets will turn to backup Tyrod Taylor to fill in.
Some Other Key Contributors Are Banged Up
The other four players listed on the Jets‘ injury report were linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball (hamstring), safety Andre Cisco (shoulder), cornerback Sauce Gardner (groin), and linebacker Francisco Mauigoa (elbow).
That group includes two more starters and two key special teamers. The good news is McCrary-Ball was the only limited participant; the other three were all full participants. That’s a good sign for their availability heading into the first road game of the season.
Buccaneers Are Banged up as Well
Tampa Bay isn’t 100% either, but they’re much healthier than the Jets are when comparing injury reports.
Only four players who are hurt didn’t practice for the Bucs on Wednesday. All of the others were, at the very least, limited.
Tampa Bay Loses a Key Cog on the D-Line
An MRI just now confirmed Buccaneers DT Calijah Kancey tore his pec last night, source says. He will need surgery and his season is over,” NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo posted on social media.
Kancey, 24, entered the league as the No. 19 overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft. When he has been on the field, the former Pitt product has produced.
Kancey has racked up 11.5 sacks, 29 quarterback hits, and 22 tackles for loss. The only problem is that Kancey has struggled to stay on the field. He has yet to complete a full season in his NFL career.
Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said at the podium that you can’t replace what he brings to the table as a pass rusher.
