Days before the Super Bowl, the New York Jets announced a new addition to the roster.
On social media, the green and white posted that they have signed Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Jack Heflin to “a reserve/future contract.” The team did not announce a corresponding roster move.
“Heflin (6-3, 304) spent the last two seasons on the Rams’ practice squad, played in one game, the team’s 2025 regular-season finale, and registered 2 tackles. He began his NFL career with the Packers, where he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021 after four seasons at Northern Illinois and one at Iowa. [Heflin] did stints with the Giants (2022), the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks (2023), and the Saints (2023-24) before landing in LA. He has appeared in 7 games and totaled 7 total tackles in his NFL career,” the team wrote in a press release.
In 2023 with the Houston Roughnecks, Heflin was named to the All-XFL squad.
Jets OC Search Takes Strange Turn
On Monday, February 2, the Jets announced that they had “completed in-person interviews with Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman for our offensive coordinator position.”
These were second interviews for Bevell and Roman. Last week, they both participated in a virtual meeting for the OC vacancy.
ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler reported over the weekend that the Jets would cut their initial list of five down to three finalists.
Roman and Bevell were both reported as finalists. On Sunday, February 1, ESPN’s Rich Cimini told radio host Jake Asman and former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum that Frank Reich was the third finalist.
So why didn’t the Jets announce an in-person interview with him?
“There are two in-person interviews that are happening, it’s Bevell and Greg Roman. The expectation is that probably Frank Reich is going to get that as well. I think Boomer Esiason was talking about this on WFAN that [Reich] is on vacation. I think somebody sent that to me, I didn’t hear it from Boomer, but somebody said like Frank Reich is on vacation right now, which is probably why he hasn’t been in yet or something like that,” NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY explained on “Jets Final Drive.”
What Is Going on With the Jets Search?
Reich interviewed virtually last week with the team for the OC job. By all accounts, he was going to be hired for a senior role on the Jets’ offensive staff prior to Tanner Engstrand being fired.
However, once that firing occurred, the Rooney Rule qualifications are different for hiring a coordinator versus a senior role. Which, long story short, at the very least extended the interview process.
“I know that they were talking contract specifics, I know that Frank Reich had reached out to others that he wanted on his coaching staff, I know that Frank was telling people that it was about a done deal. That is where this was a week ago,” Hughes revealed on “Jets Final Drive.”
So if he was about to be hired and they had gone that far along in the process, why did Reich take a vacation knowing it would disrupt the Jets’ search?
There is always twists and turns when anything is involved in the Jets.
Now the green and white have to decide between Bevell and Roman for the OC role. Or wait for Reich to return from his vacation, interview him, then decide between the three who they want.
