The reports of New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields’ injury have been greatly exaggerated.
Fields returned to training camp practice on Saturday, July 26, and he didn’t miss a beat.
One of the big points of progress on Saturday, July 26, for Fields was participating in individual drills. That didn’t happen on Friday, July 25 a day after suffering a dislocated toe.
He also appeared in 7-on-7s, and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic said Fields looked “awesome in these drills.”
Fields Highlights From Jets Training Camp on Saturday, July 26
Richie Mollura of Jets Media charted Fields going 8-for-8 during the 7-on-7 period.
“Justin Fields just went 8/8 in 7v7🔥🎯. The final throw was a beauty to the right sideline to Arian Smith. Great to see JF7 out there slinging it after that injury scare,” he posted on social media.
During 7-on-7 action, Fields found Jets wide receiver Tyler Johnson for a near 40-yard drop-in-the-bucket throw with three defenders in the area for a big play.
The Jets’ official X account previously Twitter shared a different angle of that throw.
Aaron Glenn Speaks About Fields’ Progress at Jets Camp
“Just trying to ease him in. We said it was going to be a collaborative process between [Fields], Zuff [David Zuffelato, the Jets’ head athletic trainer], and myself to make sure that he is ready-ready when he gets involved in the team drills and things like that,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn told the media.
The Jets have an off day on Sunday, July 27, and then they return to action on Monday, July 28. That is when the pads come on for the first time during Jets’ training camp.
Judy Battista of the NFL Network asked Glenn if we will see Fields fully return by then.
“We’re going to make sure that we take him along slowly, but I know this: I have to hold him back. I’d rather have to hold a guy back than make him go,” Glenn explained on NFL Plus.
Glenn Versus the Media Continues to Wage On
There is an interesting dynamic between coach Glenn and ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
Cimini has been covering the team for over 35 years. That includes covering Glenn when he was a player with the Jets as a first-round draft choice in the 1994 NFL draft.
Over the last couple of months, they have had some fun exchanges back and forth. Saturday, July 26, was no exception.
Cimini asked Glenn about what will be the “biggest challenge” for Fields, considering “he’s a little behind.”
Glenn responded, “Why would you say that? He missed one day.” Cimini explained, “Well, that’s why I said not too much.”
Glenn finished the conversation by saying, “He is gonna be just fine. He missed one day; he has been in meetings, so he will be just fine.”
Cimini told me on “Boy Green Daily” that he enjoys the back-and-forths with Glenn.
