New York Jets fans across the planet have been sweating bullets since the alert came through from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Justin Fields “was carted to the locker room.”
While that was a scary situation, good news has only continued to pour in since.
“Still awaiting more word on Justin Fields, but all vibes surrounding the #Jets’ QB are he’ll be in line to start Week 1 against the #Steelers. The matchup of the teams’ former QBs facing one another appears intact,” NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo shared on social media.
This injury took place during the second day of Jets training camp on Thursday, July 24. Gang Green will kick off the 2025 season against Pittsburgh in Week 1 on Sunday, September 7.
***UPDATE***
“UPDATE: After medical evaluation, QB Justin Fields sustained a dislocated toe in his right foot and will be day-to-day. Fields avoided serious injury and significant missed time,” the Jets posted on social media.
The Next Big Question for Fields and the Jets
Hearing that Fields is still in play for the season opener is a massive sigh of relief.
When a player is getting carted off, your mind goes to a very dark place. Especially if you’re a Jets fan, considering what you endured with Aaron Rodgers four plays into the 2023 Week 1 contest.
Good news: Fields appears on track to suit up in six weeks for the season opener.
However, a dislocated toe will likely require Fields to miss some time.
“Some relief for #Jets fans: Justin Fields’ toe injury is not significant and he shouldn’t be sidelined that long, per source. They’re hopeful that he will be ready for Week 1 against the Steelers,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini said.
Not missing regular-season games is good news, but Fields also needs this time in training camp.
He is learning his third different offense in three years. Fields has to build chemistry with his teammates. He needs to get reps in this offensive system. If he misses a ton of time in camp, that could severely disrupt his groove heading into an all important 2025 campaign.
“Not seeing this as season ending or long term. In fact, expect his availability soon well ahead of Week 1,” Dr. David Chao said on X previously Twitter. “Of course depends on side, which toe and what joint dislocated.”
NFL Insider Provides Massive Sighs of Relief on Fields-Jets Injury
NFL Insider Aditi Kinkhabwala shared some critical updates during a television hit for NFL on CBS.
She said Fields injured his “second toe, not his big toe” on the right foot. That is important because that isn’t his plant foot, but rather his pushoff foot.
“A sigh of relief for the organization,” Kinkhabwala said. “It is significantly better than what was initially feared when he was carted off the field.”
