It didn’t take long for Josh Grizzard to find another job, and it’s a high profile one at that.
Grizzard, who was fired after one season as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this month, will be the new Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach in 2026.
“More help in Philadelphia: Eagles are hiring former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard as their pass game coordinator, per sources,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on his official X account on Friday. “Grizzard now will join new Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion to lead Philadelphia’s offense.”
The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles fired their offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo, after one season and following an embarrassing home loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round. Mannion was hired on Thursday.
Grizzard started off the season as one of the more buzzed-about assistant coaches in the NFL and even was being mentioned as a possible head coaching candidate following a 5-1 start to the regular season.
Injuries and Grizzard’s inability to retool the offense to the personnel available was one factor in Tampa Bay losing 7 of its last 9 games and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
“Congrats to Josh Grizzard, the Bucs former offensive coordinator who was a bit of a scapegoat for the 8-9 season,” Tampa Bay Times NFL reporter Rick Stroud wrote on his official X account. “He gets a fresh start with the Eagles as the pass game coordinator.”
Pressure on Mannion From the Jump
Mannion is the fifth offensive coordinator for the Eagles in 5 years.
- 2022: Shane Steichen (hired as Indianapolis Colts head coach)
- 2023: Brian Johnson (fired after one season)
- 2024: Kellen Moore (hired as New Orleans Saints head coach)
- 2025: Kevin Patullo (fired after one season)
“First of all, congratulations to Sean Mannion,” ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said on Friday. ” … I hate being this cynical or skeptical about a hire because it’s not pertaining to his capability. But these are the Eagles we’re talking about. Everybody says Mannion is a rising star. I hope he succeeds. But you need somebody a bit more experienced because of the personnel you have and the personalities you have. The second things go awry … especially if A.J. Brown is still there … this could be bad. Based on the Eagles’ history, I’ve got to be skeptical.”
The Eagles have one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, arguably the best running back in the NFL in Saquon Barkley and elite wide receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.
They also have the reigning Super Bowl MVP in quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Tapping Into Hurts’ Skill Set Key to Everything
How Mannion and Grizzard adapt to Hurts’ skill set seems to be the key to making all of this work.
“Couple things I’m inferring (from Mannion hire),” The Ringer’s Diante Lee wrote on X. “The real priority is Hurts. I’d guess Philly would only take a guy this early in his career b/c he’s a former QB. Likely a multiyear situation for Mannion. Hiring to establish continuity is probably a good idea. Scheme ain’t changing.”
