While no one can really say they were surprised by what occurred on the Philadelphia Eagles sideline in the first half of their NFC Wild Card Round Game against the San Francisco 49ers, it was still shocking to see it play out like it did.
There was Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, sprinting down the sideline, screaming at someone — someone who turned out to be 3-time NFL All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown.
Then there was Sirianni and Brown, face-to-face, screaming at each other in a heated exchange before they had to be separated by Eagles security chief Dom “Big Dom” DiSandro. Brown, now with his helmet off, continuing to chirp at Sirianni as more players and support staff intervened.
It all happened after Brown dropped 2 long passes from quarterback Jalen Hurts, and right before the defending Super Bowl champions went into halftime with a 13-10 lead on the way to a 23-19 loss.
“I’m not sure this even registers as a top-10 A.J. Brown controversy,” NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo wrote on his official X account. “Sirianni told him to get off the field, seemingly to avoid a penalty for too many men. Jordan Mailata was close, too. There was time on the play clock and it got reset though.”
“I don’t understand why Nick Sirianni is running down and yelling at A.J. Brown,” Fox Sports analyst and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan said at halftime. “I think it distracts from what your team is trying to do … in my opinion, as a player, I wouldn’t have taken that very well from my coach.”
Brown had 3 catches for 25 yards on 2 targets in the first half and didn’t have a catch in the second half.
Sirianni Offers Details on Sideline Beef
Sirianni offered somewhat of an explanation during his post-halftime interview with Fox Sports sideline reporter Erin Andrews.
“Emotions run high,” Sirianni told Andrews. “Especially in the playoffs. Of course, after this game, we’ll go back to loving other. But we’re all fine, thanks.”
Social Media Melts Down at Philly Meltdown
Despite Sirianni saying the exact opposite, most of the football-loving public with an internet connection and a social media account felt quite the opposite.
Both Sirianni and Brown have a detailed history of confrontations and bizarre behavior.
Sirianni famously confronted Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz after a 2024 regular season game and Brown has lobbed shots at Hurts through the media and on his own social media for years.
“As a diehard lifelong Eagles fan, we shouldn’t be putting up with AJ Brown’s behavior anymore,” BetMGM Gameday’s Austin Huff wrote on X. “I think it’s time we trade him back to the Titans. I’d even be willing to give him up for next to nothing. just absolutely awful.”
“Almost like Nick Sirianni was saying to AJ Brown that you’ve been too much of a pain in the ass this year not to catch that ball,” Compass Media Net’s Zach Gelb wrote on X.
“So AJ Brown alligator arms one deep ball, drops another one, and then comes back to sideline to yell at his coach?” Not So Cool Guy wrote on X.
