Latest 49ers News
Dre Greenlaw : Ditches walking boot
Greenlaw (Achilles) no longer requires a walking boot, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Greenlaw made a public appearance at an event in San Jose and discussed his recovery from Achilles surgery. He has previously said he hopes to be ready for Week 1, and his ability to walk without a boot is a small step in that direction. Greenlaw's level of participation at the start of training camp will be more telling regarding his availability come the regular season.
Earnest Brown : Gets let go
Brown was waived by the 49ers on Tuesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Brown headed to San Francisco in February after appearing in 12 games over two seasons with the Rams. The Northwestern product will depart the team, along with center Corey Luciano, to make room for recent additions, Chris Hubbard and Shakel Brown to keep the 49ers under the current 90-man roster limit.
Chris Hubbard : Lands in San Francisco
The 49ers signed Hubbard (biceps) to a one-year, $1.38 million contract Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Hubbard fills a need for San Francisco as a depth swing tackle. The veteran's 2023 campaign came to an early end Week 11 due to a biceps injury, from which he's now presumably recovered.
Terique Owens : San Francisco bound
Owens has agreed to terms on a contract with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent. Owens opted to declare for the NFL Draft after three seasons at Missouri State and ultimately went undrafted. His junior season was his most successful, as he recorded 528 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 28 receptions. The rookie pass catcher will now compete with a plethora of young pass catchers for the opportunity to either provide depth at wide receiver on the team's 53-man roster or a spot on the practice squad.
Tanner Mordecai : Added to San Francisco’s roster
Mordecai has agreed to terms on a contract with the 49ers. Mordecai was a backup at Oklahoma to commence his collegiate career before transferring to SMU and recording 7,152 yards through the air, 72 touchdowns and 22 interceptions across two seasons. He subsequently played one final season with the Badgers in Wisconsin, where he recorded 2,065 passing yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions. With plenty of experience under center, he will now look to prove himself as an NFL caliber quarterback in San Francisco. He will presumably compete with Brandon Allen for the No. 3 role under center behind Brock Purdy and Joshua Dobbs.
Brandon Aiyuk : Likely staying in Bay Area
49ers GM John Lynch recently told ESPN's Pat McAfee Show that he doesn't want to trade Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel despite taking Ricky Pearsall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Trade rumors earlier in the offseason centered on Aiyuk, who is scheduled to play out 2024 under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. After the Niners drafted Pearsall, a few reporters suggested Samuel was actually more likely to be moved, in which case the Niners presumably would place greater emphasis on signing Aiyuk to a long-term deal. It now appears both will stay with the team this season, as will returning No. 3 receiver Jauan Jennings. That's not a guarantee, but it at least seems more likely that spring 2025 will be the break-up date for San Francisco's veteran WR corps. Aiyuk and Jennings are only under contract through 2024, while Samuel has two more year on his deal but no guaranteed money after this season.
Deebo Samuel : Likely staying with team this year
Samuel wasn't traded during the 2024 NFL Draft and now seems likely to stay with the 49ers for at least one more season, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports. The 49ers selected WRs in Rounds 1 (Ricky Pearsall) and 4 (Jacob Cowing), and while they reportedly fielded trade offers for both Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, nothing ever came to fruition. It now seems more likely that the WR group will undergo significant changes next offseason, at which point Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings are scheduled for unrestricted free agency and Samuel will have just one year remaining on his contract (with no guaranteed money). A contract extension for Aiyuk in the coming weeks/months would further increase speculation about Samuel eventually being the odd man out.
Deebo Samuel : Drawing interest from Pats, Bills
The Patriots and Bills have interest in trading for Samuel, Michael Giardi of Boston Sports Journal reports. There's been a lot of trade chatter around Samuel's teammate, Brandon Aiyuk, but Giardi reports Samuel is "more likely to be traded" and has a couple interested suitors in Buffalo and New England. Both offenses are in dire need of wideout help, and the Bills (33rd overall) and Patriots (34th) hold picks atop the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night. Samuel has two years left on his contract but has been more prone to injuries throughout his career, missing six regular-season games and parts of several others across the last two seasons. Aiyuk, meanwhile, is coming off a career year and a second consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season. The Niners used their first-round pick Thursday night on Florida WR Ricky Pearsall, further fueling trade chatter on the team's veteran wideouts.
