The Seattle Seahawks made a key roster decision on Thursday when they signed former Minnesota Vikings third round pick and linebacker, Chazz Surratt, to the 53-man roster.
Surratt joins a group consisting of 2024 fourth round pick, Tyrice Knight, former Los Angeles Ram, Ernest Jones IV, and 2023 UDFA, Drake Thomas in Seattle after being released by the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week.
However, that means that one player will also have to go in a corresponding move, and in this case it’s former 2022 undrafted safety, D’Anthony Bell, who was released the same day, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson.
The Seahawks announced the signing of LB Chazz Surratt to their 53-man roster.” Henderson reported on Thursday, “They waived S D’Anthony Bell to make room.
Henderson also announced that the team had made some changes to the practice squad composition, exchanging one linebacker for another and adding a receiver/return specialist to the ranks in lieu of running back, Anthony Tyus III.
They also signed LB Chris “Pooh” Paul Jr. and WR/KR Courtney Jackson to their practice squad, releasing LB Jalan Gaines and RB Anthony Tyus III.
D’Anthony Bell Released From The Team After Making Original 53-Man Roster
There is likely fewer things more disheartening than going through the trials and tribulations of training camp, finally making the regular season roster – especially as a former undrafted free agent – only to then be cut by said organization as players get signed off of other teams’ releases.
Bell had played in all but one regular season game for the Cleveland Browns since entering the league back in 2022, where he had generally resided as the fifth choice safety for the organization. He made seven starts and recorded two interceptions over the course of his three-year stint with the franchise.
The former West Florida man signed a one year deal with Seattle since leaving Ohio, but he was was released in favor of 2023 UDFA, Ty Okada, who will now take the de facto fourth choice safety spot after Surrat’s arrival.
How Is The Seahawks Safety Room Shaking Up Ahead Of The Start Of The Season?
Julian Love and Coby Bryant will start the season as the main guys in Seattle at strong and free safety. However, second round rookie Nick Emmanwori will almost certainly play a significant feature role on defense, much of it being in the “big-nickel” package, according to Brady Henderson.
The Seahawks have a clear role in mind for Emmanwori,” Henderson wrote on August 22nd, “who will play regularly in their big-nickel package and will operate near the line of scrimmage. He has made enough plays in camp to look like he has the potential to be an impact player right away, even in a part-time role.”
After spending a second and a third round pick to move up to the 35th overall pick and select Emmanwori in April, the Seahawks will certainly be looking for on-the-field production from their talented young rookie.
