The Seattle Seahawks have gotten off to a good start this season. But despite their impressive form, it has come to pass that some believe they could be sellers ahead of the trade deadline.
NFL insider, Ian Rapoport, posted on Sunday that he believes cornerback, Riq Woolen, could be a trade target for the team over the course of the next few weeks, prior to November’s cut-off.
Seahawks Looking To Move Former Standout Cornerback
“With Seahawks star CB Devon Witherspoon returning on Thursday,” Rapoport wrote on Sunday, “teams are monitoring Pro Bowl CB Riq Woolen as a possible trade target by the deadline, sources tell The Insiders. Woolen’s playing time has diminished, and in a contract year, teams believe he could be available.”
And as such, Seahawks Draft Blog has an interesting proposal for the team. Instead of moving Woolen for a mid-to-late round pick – the benefits of which the team likely wouldn’t see for at least another two years – Seattle should consider doing a player-for-player swap.
The player proposed – Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker, Devin Lloyd.
“Draft compensation is likely to be minimal.” The publication wrote. “Whenever journalists are offering ‘come and get him’ pleas in the media, value is not going to be high. It feels like the Seahawks are ready to move on and will take the best offer they can get.
A deal involving a pick wouldn’t likely get much other than a late rounder. A sixth maybe? Something minimal anyway. A more attractive option could be to find a player-for-player arrangement.”
A Devin Lloyd – Riq Woolen Trade Could Be A Win/Win Scenario
The publication notes that the Jaguars are struggling at corner – especially whilst rookie first round pick, Travis Hunter, acclimatizes to his dual-position role on both offense and defense.
And, on the Seahawks‘ side, the team needs help at linebacker – and a player of Lloyd’s quality could be a definite upgrade for them this season.
From the Seahawks perspective it does feel a little bit like Tyrice Knight isn’t fully healthy. He’s been sharing time with Drake Thomas. Is there room for another addition at linebacker? Arguably yes. We saw how important this position is to the Seahawks last season.
A former first round pick, Lloyd has played well this year and last. There’s a bit of an Ernest Jones feel to all of this, where a linebacker is perhaps under-appreciated where he is but can thrive elsewhere. Having more depth and quality at this position might further bolster Seattle’s defense.”
Devin Lloyd has had a strong start to the 2025 season, which crescendoed on Sunday when he twice intercepted San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Brock Purdy, en route to a 26-21 win.
On the flip side, Woolen has never managed to capitalize on a stellar rookie season in 2022 that had many thinking he would be Richard Sherman incarnate for years to come, after being taken by Seattle out of UTSA in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft.
Performances that have consistently allowed big plays for opposing teams’ offenses have meant that he is now reportedly considered somewhat expendable by the team. And if the Seahawks can get a top-quality defensive player in return, this type of move should be a no brainer for Seattle.
