On This Day in 2008: Brock Lesnar Makes His UFC Debut

It’s been 18 years since UFC 81, when Brock Lesnar entered the UFC octagon for the first time. Lesnar’s transition from pro wrestling to MMA captivated audiences and had a massive impact on the UFC.

The UFC gave no special treatment to Lesnar. He was matched up against former heavyweight champion Frank Mir for his promotional debut.

Lesnar, a former WWE superstar, had an elite-level amateur wrestling background that included an NCAA Division I National championship. He had fought only once on the regional circuit, earning a dominant 1st round TKO over Min-Soo Kim.

Mir, meanwhile, was an experienced fighter and former champion with 13 career fights, and was known for his elite grappling.

Although he lacked experience, Lesnar was unfazed and determined to prove he was a legitimate world-class fighter. Some of his friends from WWE were in attendance, including Kurt Angle, The Undertaker, and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

How Did Brock Lesnar Perform in His UFC Debut?

Brock Lesnar performed impressively in his UFC debut against Frank Mir.

It was no secret that Lesnar’s strategy was to shoot for takedowns, and he did just that. He immediately took Mir down in their first exchange and began landing strikes. However, Lesnar was deducted a point for landing a strike to the back of the head.

Lesnar then dropped Mir with a right hand during their first exchange after the fight resumed on the feet. He showcased his incredible athleticism and power, quickly swarming the former heavyweight champion.

Lesnar seemed fully in control of the fight. However, he left himself exposed, and Mir capitalized off his back. The former heavyweight champion grabbed Lesnar’s left leg and secured a kneebar.

With nowhere to go and plenty of time remaining, Lesnar was forced to tap at 1:30 of the 1st round. Despite the result, Lesnar was praised for his effort, considering it was only his second professional fight.

Lesnar’s wasn’t discouraged by the loss and continued his MMA career. He earned a unanimous decision win over Heath Herring in his next bout.

That victory earned Lesnar a title shot against Randy Couture at UFC 91. He defeated the UFC Hall of Famer by 2nd round TKO to capture the UFC heavyweight championship.

Lesnar Reflected on His Submission Loss to Mir

Lesnar reflected on his submission loss to Mir in his UFC debut and admitted that it was a valuable learning experience.

The former UFC heavyweight champion revealed that he extensively trained counters for the kneebar that Mir submitted him with. During a 2022 appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Lesnar said the loss made him even more driven to succeed in MMA.

“It was very humbling, my first fight in the UFC against Frank [Mir] because I had prepared for the kneebar so many times, probably a million times, I prepared for how to get out and counter what he got me in,” Lesnar said. “I was so mad at myself and it just kind of built another thing that people ram down your throat and say you can’t do something. Love those people.”

He added:

“I had a one-fight deal and I was like, ‘[Dana White], please just give me another shot at this.”
