Dawn Staley is making $4.25 million in guaranteed annual compensation during South Carolina’s current contract year, with built-in annual raises that run through 2030, according to a term sheet.
That’s the straightforward answer fans may be searching for as South Carolina gets set to face UCLA in Sunday’s national championship game. Staley is back on the biggest stage in women’s college basketball, and her contract shows exactly how much South Carolina values the program she has built.
The school approved Staley’s extension in January 2025. The deal runs through April 15, 2030, includes a $500,000 signing bonus, and started at an annualized $4 million before increasing to $4.25 million for the 2025-26 contract year.

Staley’s salary is set to rise by $250,000 each year over the life of the deal. After this year’s $4.25 million total, the contract moves to $4.5 million in 2026-27, $4.75 million in 2027-28, $5 million in 2028-29, and $5.25 million in 2029-30.
At the time the extension was signed, it was widely described as the richest contract in women’s college basketball.
That number matters because South Carolina didn’t pay Staley for promise alone. The school paid to keep one of the sport’s premier coaches after she turned the Gamecocks into a national powerhouse. By the time this deal was signed, Staley had already delivered multiple national titles and established South Carolina as one of the sport’s standard-setters.
Now, only months later, the Gamecocks are back in the national championship game again.
What the national championship could mean financially
Staley’s contract includes NCAA Tournament incentives, and the biggest one is tied directly to Sunday’s result. If South Carolina beats UCLA to win the national championship, Staley would earn a $500,000 title bonus.
The postseason bonus structure is based on the highest tournament achievement rather than stacking every round. A Final Four appearance is worth $250,000, an Elite Eight appearance $100,000, a Sweet 16 berth $50,000, and simply making the NCAA Tournament $25,000.
But for fans watching the championship, the clearest figure is the top one: a national title would add another $500,000 to her total.
There are also other incentives tied to SEC performance, championships, coaching honors and final rankings, but the title bonus is the cleanest number attached to Sunday’s stakes.

The contract says as much about South Carolina’s ambitions as it does about Staley’s résumé.
This is a school paying to keep the face of one of the sport’s most dominant programs. Staley’s value goes beyond wins alone. South Carolina is investing in her ability to recruit elite players, maintain championship expectations and keep the Gamecocks in the center of the national title picture year after year.
There’s also a notable clause in the deal: if Staley left for another college job, South Carolina could pursue liquidated damages tied to the remaining guaranteed compensation. But if she left to become a head or assistant coach in the NBA or WNBA, that would not apply.
The bottom line on Dawn Staley’s salary
The simple answer is that Dawn Staley is making $4.25 million this year, with raises already built into her contract through 2030.
The more relevant answer on championship day is this: if South Carolina wins another national title, that number gets a $500,000 boost. For a coach who has made title contention feel routine, South Carolina is paying accordingly.
