Is Judge Dredd gay? The latest issue apparently seemed to hint at it.
The most recent issue of the Judge Dredd comic book (2000 AD) was titled “Closet” and is about a teenager struggling to come out as gay. The most important part for fans, though, is the very first panel in a gay club with another man and admitting that deep down he’s always known he was gay.
Except that it wasn’t the actual Judge Dredd.
It’s just a man dressed as Dredd in a Dredd themed gay club. However, that doesn’t mean the issue of Dredd’s sexuality is settled. The writer of the comic, Rob Williams, explicitly stated as much:
[Dredd] may well be gay, straight or bi [but that was secondary to his passion for the law]. Although, can you imagine what would happen if that repression ever fell away, just for an instant? Sure, Dredd could be gay. You can’t look at the original costume design of leather and chains and not see a fetishistic edge there. But Dredd’s feelings are so deeply hidden, he is extremely unlikely to ever let them show.
And as usual, comic book fans heard this news with a mixture of interest and excitement to see what exactly would happen in the comic and how it would all unfold. Ha! Just kidding! They through a world class hissy fit and threatened to burn copies.
Of course, some applauded the development, like adults. But if everyone just acted like adults, this wouldn’t be a news story because a comic book character possibly being gay wouldn’t be considered anything terrible, but just an intriguing aspect of that character that may lead to new and interesting story lines.
Oh well, I guess the real shame in all this is we missed our chance to make Sylvester Stallone kiss a bunch of dudes. I just think that’d be funny.
