Porn Producer Sues to Fight Los Angeles Condom Law

Adult film producer Vivid Entertainment filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County on Friday over a measure that requires porn actors to wear condoms, arguing that the law violates the first amendment’s protection of free expression. The new law, known as Measure B, was passed by voters in November with 57 percent in favor.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which is a supporter of the Measure B, says that the regulation seeks to protect the health and safety of porn actors against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

But Vivid Entertainment says that the law is a violation of free speech and is also unnecessary because the porn industry already has safeguards, such as the regular blood testing of actors, to prevent the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Attorney for the plaintiffs, Paul Cambria, says porn producers in Los Angeles have been leaving the area, which is the heart of the massive porn inductry, to film elsewhere.

“I can tell you they are leaving L.A. County in droves,” Cambria said. “It’s a multi-billion dollar industry that employs thousands of people, and ever since this all started they have been leaving and filming in places other than L.A. County.”

The measure has been in effect since December, but the county struggles to find a way to enforce the law. Supporters argue that porn producers can digitally remove the condoms in post-production, but producers say doing so would be cost prohibitive.
