Iraqi forces in east Mosul happened upon the Islamic holy book rigged with explosives in Iraq. While the video does not show its detonation, it is an example of how un-Islamic ISIS is. Disposal of a Quran is a contentious subject in Islam, but it is allowed; the correct way to dispose of a Quran varies regionally. However, making a Quran into an IED could be considered haram, or illegal under Islamic law.
According to About Religion, respectful ways to dispose of a worn or defective text include burying it, placing the book in flowing water, or, as a last resort, burning it. Desecrating a Quran carries the death penalty in some Muslim countries.
In October, the American coalition, consisting of the Iraqi Army, the Kurdish Peshmerga, Shia militias, Christian militias, and the Turkish Nineveh Guard, descended upon Mosul to free it from the Islamic State. The official operation began on October 17 when it was announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, reports the BBC.
The past 2-weeks have seen a lull in fighting in east Mosul, but The Guardian now reports that Iraqi troops backed by US-led airstrikes have again begun their push into Mosul. The AP reports, “Elite special forces pushed into the Karama and Quds neighborhoods, while army troops and federal police advanced into the nearby Intisar, Salam and Sumor neighborhoods.”
