The Islamic State has purportedly re-released an earlier video but now with an English translation. In it, ISIS militants are shown fighting coalition forces consisting of the Iraqi Army, the Peshmerga, and more on the outskirts of Mosul, Iraq. According to terrorism analyst Michael S. Smith II, the video’s translation suggest that ISIS, now more than ever, is targeting an American audience following the attack at Ohio State University.
The video was originally released in Arabic on November 14. The 26-minute long video features various footage of ISIS attacks along with alleged “statistics” about its damage to coalition forces. In October, the American coalition, consisting of the Iraqi Army, the Kurdish Peshmerga, Shia militias, Christian militias, and the Turkish Nineveh Guard, descended upon Mosul to free it from the Islamic State. The official operation began on October 17 when it was announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
Since then, ISIS militants have been either embedding themselves into the civilian population of the city or fleeing to nearby villages to provide diversionary attacks and draw coalition resources away from Mosul.
In the video, ISIS uses drones to show suicide car bomb attacks on Abrams tanks. Abrams “is an American third-generation main battle tank. It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army chief of staff and commander of United States military forces in the Vietnam War.”
One major statistic alleged by ISIS in the video is that Mosul has cost the mainly US-financed coalition $420,000,000 so far. This cannot be independently verified. ISIS also allegs it has killed 2,200 “kuffar.” In Islamic terminology, a kuffar is a person who doesn’t believe in Islam. ISIS uses the term to refer not only to non-Muslims, but any person who doesn’t adhere to its strict, extremist interpretation of Sunni Islam.
At the end of the video, ISIS militants are shown talking about “ghanimah.” ISIS calls its “war booty” “ghanimah,” which is an Islamic term. According to the Oxford Dictionary, “In classical Islam, wealth taken by force from an enemy in times of war. There were considerable differences among the classical jurists concerning rights to, and possession of, such wealth. All were agreed, however, that ghanimah was to be distributed in accordance with the shares specified in the Quranic directive in surah 8:41.”
Quranic verse 8:41 reads: “And know that anything you obtain of war booty – then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion – the day when the two armies met. And Allah , over all things, is competent.”
When the ISIS militants state that they are returning ghanimah to their opponents, it means that they are using coalition weapons against the coalition.
