Dreampad on ‘Shark Tank’: A Look Inside the Tech Pillow that Helps You Sleep

(Amazon)

Dreampad entered the Shark Tank with their pillows that use technology to evoke vibrations to help you sleep. When paired with their app, you can also play sleep-inducing music.

Users call the pillows “life changing,” and the company receives letters from everyone from veterans who say it reduces their nightmares to parents thanking them for the fact that their children are finally able to sleep through the night.

We interviewed founder Randall Redfield, who noted that since October, they’ve sold 5,000 units. He explained that it took a few months to make the initial prototype and four years to refine it. After that, he partnered with a professional pillow company to produce the final product, which is the only one of its kind on the market.

Here’s what else he told us about…

How the Idea Came About

The idea grew out of observations made in its parent company, iLs [Integrated Listening Systems], which provides a music and movement-based therapy for children with developmental and learning difficulties. Many of these children have sleep and relaxation problems and we developed the Dreampad as a calming tool for them. It worked, and over time we realized that their parents and therapists also wanted the product for themselves. With this insight, we began to re-design the product for the larger consumer-based sleep market. Meanwhile, we continued to do research on the efficacy of the product and to sell it into our existing network of therapists and their clients.

The Science Behind It

The Dreampad works on the principal of bone conduction, which is a natural way of hearing sound. The music travels internally through a gentle vibration to your inner ear and triggers your body’s relaxation response or Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). Researchers believe this occurs through activation of the vagus nerve, which is the principle source of information to the PNS.

Advice for Future ‘Tank’ Contestants

Take preparation seriously. When you go on the show, have a sense of humor, be humble, and don’t take any shit from the Sharks.
