The rumors about why McMahon hasn’t bothered to put Savage in the WWE Hall of Fame until now have circulated for quite some time. Most wrestling insiders point to both men never reconciling with each other due to Savage’s WWE exit in 1994, which led to him joining McMahon’s rival wrestling organization WCW. The darkest rumor and reasoning for Savage’s issues with McMahon are said to stem from Savage’s rumored romance with an underage Stephanie McMahon.

Savage’s brother Lanny Poffo alluded to a 3rd rumor that may be the exact reason from his brother and McMahon’s unresolved problems. During an interview with The Tampa Tribune, Lanny spoke about what led to Savage and McMahon’s personal split:

This bitter feud between Savage and McMahon, Poffo said, began in 1987, just two years into Savage’s WWE career. That year, the promotion held an “old timers” wrestling event.

Savage’s father, Angelo Poffo, was a pro wrestler, as well. He won a few titles for small promoters during his career, but never made waves on the national scene. Savage asked McMahon if his father could participate in the old timer’s spectacle so he could finally receive his big moment. According to Poffo, the answer was no.

“Randy didn’t ever forgot that,” he said. “My father deserved to be in that match.”

The Pinellas-Pasco County medical examiner’s office late reported that Savage had an enlarged heart and advanced coronary artery disease, along with several drugs left in his system (among those drugs was a prescription painkiller).
