Last week, 23-year-old Ma Ailum was killed when she answered a phone call on her iPhone 5 while it was plugged into the wall charging. Ailum was a flight attendant for China Southern Airlines and was killed in China’s Western Xinjiang region.

Although Apple declined to comment on whether or not this electrocution was part of a larger problem, they did issue a statement in an email to Reuters saying:

We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter.

Although little is known of any similar incidents, Apple will be investigating to make sure that no other iPhone users are at risk. This tragedy comes in the wake of an open letter to Chinese costumers from Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. The letter apologized for Apple’s repair and warranty policies for iPhones in China.
