Bruce Jenner was involved in a car crash Saturday afternoon that left one person dead, with five children and two adults hospitalized for injuries.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. A Neighbor of Jenner’s Was Killed

Three vehicles were involved in the crash according to TMZ, with eight people in total inside those vehicles. Law enforcement personnel say seven people sustained minor to serious injuries with one person dead.

That person was identified Monday as 69-year-old Kim Howe, a Kardashian-Jenner neighbor. Howe was called a “sweet lady” and an animal activist by those who knew her. Both Howe and Jenner are residents of Malibu.

According to police, Howe’s Lexus crashed into the rear end of a blue Prius that had reportedly stopped short. Jenner, driving a Cadillac Escalade rammed into Howe’s car, which was pushed into oncoming traffic where it was hit again, this time by a Hummer H2.

Jenner released a short statement following the crash:

“My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident. It is a devastating tragedy, and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them. I will continue to cooperate in every way possible.”

The Los Angeles Times reported that Howe did not have a valid driver’s license at the time of the crash.

2. Jenner Said He Was Being Chased by Paparazzi

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, Jenner was driving one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Witnesses on social media suggest that Jenner himself was apparently unharmed.

Jenner initially said that he was being chased by five paparazzi at the time of the crash. A Sherrif’s deputy confirmed that he had passed a field sobriety test, suggesting he was sober behind the wheel.

However, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. John Lecrivain, who was quoted by CNN, paparazzi were not a factor:

“That is a very regular occurrence, and (there is) no indication at this time it was a contributing factor of the crash.”

3. Jenner Was Not Texting, His Publicist Said

The Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department tweeted on Saturday that the highway had been closed in both directions after the crash.

Police are looking at the cellphone records of every driver involved in the crash, but Jenner’s publicist, Alan Nierob, told the Associated Press that the reality TV star’s records would show that he was not texting while driving.

The collision occurred at approximately 12:12 p.m. Saturday at the 26000 block of the Pacific Coast Hwy in Malibu.

4. Jenner is Undergoing Gender Reassignment

An unnamed source speaking to People earlier this month said that changes have been made subtly over the course of a full year.

As the inside source told People:

“He’s being very smart about and also respectful about his transition. Instead of completely shocking everyone, his changes have been subtle, and his family has had the chance to slowly get used to his new looks and life.”

Among the first steps in his transition was a “laryngal shave,” a surgery intended to smooth out Jenner’s Adam’s apple, which he underwent more than a year ago.

5. ‘Woman Driver’ Jokes Began Immediately on Social Media

Within minutes of news of the crash hitting the Internet, would-be comedians began posting jokes referencing Jenner’s ongoing gender reassignment and stereotypes women behind the wheel.
