On July 11, Dallas officials and citizens gathered outside City Hall for a vigil to honor the five police officers killed by a sniper on July 7. The police officers killed were Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Lorne Ahrens and Michael Smith and DART officer Brent Thompson.
The sniper, identified as Micah Johnson, began shooting at the end of a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest against police brutality. It happened during the same week that the police killings of a black man in Louisiana and another in Minnesota went viral after the incidents were posted on social media.
