Covent Garden Taxi Crash: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

People are reportedly hurt after a London taxi crashed into pedestrians in the city’s Covent Garden shopping area. The horror unfolded at around 5 p.m. local time on November 1. Famed vlogger, Pro Syndicate, tweeted, “We just walked outside the theatre and a taxi just drove into a crowd of people walking past. Inches from us. Holy fking s***.” Syndicate later tweeted that “police responded incredibly fast.”

1. Police Have Said They’re Not Treating the Incident as ‘Terror Related’

The Daily Telegraph’s Harry Yorke reports that London’s Metropolitan Police are treating the incident as a “road traffic collision.” While the police tweeted, “Police on scene in Covent Garden following a collision with pedestrians in Southampton Street. Not thought to be terrorist related.” Officials have called it a “serious road traffic collision.”

2. The Cab Driver ‘Looks Incredibly Shaken as he Answers Questions’

The London Evening Standard reports that people are thought to be trapped underneath the black cab. LBC’s Vincent McAviney tweeted that stall holder told him that one pedestrian may have lost a leg. McAviney added, “The black cab driver looks incredibly shaken as he answers questions.” In a press release, London police said, “We are aware of injuries but await further confirmation.” The stall holder likely worked at the Jubilee Market Hall which is close to where the incident took place.

The London Evening Standard reports that one person suffered a “major leg injury,” while two others were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. A fourth person was treated at the scene.”

3. One Witness Reported ‘Hearing Screams’

Speaking to the BBC, one witness described “hearing screams” at the scene. The Daily Telegraph’s Harry Yorke quoted witnesses saying that the cab driver appeared to lose control of his car. Yorke added that witnesses said the cab hit a telephone booth.

4. The Driver Has Been Described as a White Male in His 40s

LBC’s Vincent McAviney reports that the cab driver is a white male in his 40s. The incident is being investigated by detectives from Scotland Yard. A spokesperson said, “It is not being treated anything other than a collision.”

5. The Crash Happened While the World Is on Edge Following the Halloween Attack in New York City

This incident comes 24 hours after police arrested Sayfullo Saipov, 29, and accused of him of plowing a truck into a crowd in New York City. In total, eight people were killed as a result of that attack. Saipov is thought to have declared his loyalty for ISIS prior to the attack.
