WWE Clash of Champions 2016: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know

WCW once held one of the most heralded wrestling events of all time: Clash of the Champions.

Now in 2016, WWE has done away with their Night of Champion PPV name and has decided to switch it up a bit. WCW fans will get to see their former favorite event make its return (without the “the”) with WWE Clash of Champions 2016. RAW’s WWE Universal, United States, Tag Team and Women’s Championship titles will be up for grabs in a number of hotly contested matchups. Seth Rollins will be out for revenge as he heads into the main event against HHH’s personal pick for RAW’s main star, Kevin Owens. Rusev will bump heads with Roman Reigns, The New Day will once again face off with Anderson & Gallows and Charlotte will fight to keep her title from Sasha Banks and Bayley.

Now that WWE Clash of Champions 2016 has kicked off, we’ll be right here with all the results and highlights you need to know.

Alicia Fox vs. Nia Jax

WWE Clash of Champions 2016

Winner: Nia Jax!

Highlights: Alicia went right at Nia as soon as their match began, but it was to no avail. Miss Jax just began manhandling Alicia with her brutal strikes, shoves and submission holds. Nia held Alicia in a neck vice-like maneuver for several moments while the crowd cheered for Alicia to escape. Alicia almost elbowed her way out of the hold, but Nia threw her halfway across the ring instead. Afterwards, Nia ran right into a corner ring post. Alicia finally began fighting back with some strikes of her own. Alicia dropped Nia’s neck on the top rope, landed on her with a flying body splash and tried to finish her with a Scissors Kick. This offense didn’t help her too much after all since she got rammed by Nia’s full brunt of strength. Alicia met her end after getting her face smashed in the corner and then getting dropped with a Samoan Slam.

The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and/or Xavier Woods) (c) vs. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson (WWE RAW Tag Team Championship)

WWE Clash of Champions 2016

Winners: And still the RAW Tag Team Champions, The New Day!

Highlights: The New Day frowned upon the men they were about to face and told the live audience they weren’t even as half as fun as they were. Once the match officially started, Gallows ran down Big E and Xavier while Anderson landed a Running Sitdown Powerbomb on Kofi. Anderson then landed a nice running kick in the corner on Kofi to add more punishment to The New Day. Anderson and Gallows then took turns beating the hell out of Kofi while his partners remained laid out at ringside. Kofi finally managed to get out of Gallows’ grasp and tag in Big E. Big E then went suplex crazy on Anderson and then landed his Big Splash on him soon after. Big E went for his suicide dive spear, but Anderson kneed him right in the face. Anderson then ran at Big E, but got slammed when Big E grabbed ahold of him. The match continued as Anderson got back to his feet and landed a big running kick on Big E.

Anderson and Gallows managed to catch Big E with the Boot of Doom, but he kicked out. The match got crazier as Big E made the tag to Kofi. Kofi jumped right into Spinebuster, though. Gallows got in a few good moves and him and Anderson almost finished him off. All of a sudden, Kofi cracked Anderson with his Trouble in Paradise and helped Big E land his Big Ending. Gallows saved his partner just in the nick of time, though. The end finally came after some outside madness ensued, which led to the ref missing Xavier hitting Anderson with his trombone Francesca. The New Day then got the win by hitting The Midnight Hour on Anderson.

T.J. Perkins (c) vs. Brian Kendrick (WWE Cruiserweight Championship)

WWE Clash of Champions 2016

Winner: And still the WWE Cruiserweight Champion, T.J. Perkins!

Highlights: TJP arrived with a pretty awesome new video-game themed entrance theme song/entrance. TJP offered a handshake to Kendrick, but Kendrick turned his back on TJP’s sign of respect. As both men locked up, Kendrick got the better of him at first. TJP then used his headscissors takedown on two occasions to ground Kendrick. When both men got back up, Kendrick got control of his opponent once again. Then both men exchanged all types of counters, which almost saw Kendrick get locked in the knee bar submission. Kendrick escaped his hold and left the ring. TJP went for his dropkick to the outside, but Kendrick used the ring apron to trap TJP and beat him down. Kendrick used this opportunity to work over TJP. Kendrick remained in control for a little while until he got trapped in another of TJP’s submission holds.

TJP ran into Kendrick near the ropes, which led to him dodging TJP and dropping him neck first onto the ropes. Kendrick locked in a neck-focused submission hold to continue wearing down TJP’s neck. TJP managed to break the hold and use his trickery to confuse and further anger Kendrick. TJP got the upper hand during this sprint of offense, but Kendrick took him down once again with some painful neck submissions. TJP escaped it after a few moments and used a mule kick to take Kendrick down. Then TJP used a number of impressive looking moves to ground Kendrick. TJP used a suplex combo on Kendrick and attempted to follow it up with a top-rope maneuver. Kendrick tried to knock him down, but TJP shoved him away. Then TJP did the unthinkable by catching Kendrick with a Hurricanrana that flipped both men outside the ring.

Both men almost got counted out, but they entered the ring before the count of 10. Kendrick looked to land his Sliced Bread #2, but TJP flipped out of it and threw Kendrick into the ropes for his Cannonball Dropkick. TJP then looked to land his 450 Splash, but Kendrick dodged it and locked in his finishing submission. TJP escaped and then locked in his hold on Kendrick. Kendrick almost tapped out, but he broke out of the hold and almost got the win via his Sliced Bread #2. TJP survived this big move, landed his kick to Kendrick out of a Fireman’s Carry position and got the tap-out victory with his knee bar hold. After the match, TJP was poised to speak about his win. But Kendrick shocked the crowd by headbutting TJP after he just gave him a hug.
