Scottie Scheffler will take home $3.1 million as the winner of The Open Championship in 2025 as part of a $17 million purse, according to the R&A. The purse is the same as the prize money for the 2024 British Open, won by Xander Schauffele.
The tournament, the final major of the 2025 season, was played from July 16 to July 20 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
Scheffler finished at 17-under par to be come the Champion Golfer of the Year. Second place finisher Harris English (-13) will win $1.759 million and third place finisher Chris Gotterup (-12) will take home $1.128 million.
Matthew Fitzpatrick, Haotong Li and Wyndham Clark finished in a tie for fourth at 11-under.
Hometown hero Rory McIlroy finished tied for seventh at 10-under with Robert MacIntyre and Schauffele. Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners, Brian Harman and Russell Henley tied for 10th at 9-under.
When asked about his success closing out tournaments in recent years, Scheffler told reporters after the third round, “Your guess is as good as mine. I like being out here competing. This is why we work so hard is to have opportunities like this, and I’m excited for the challenge of tomorrow. Winning major championships is not an easy task, and I’ve put myself in a good position. Going into tomorrow I’m going to step up there on the first tee and I’m going to be trying to get the ball in the fairway, and when I get to the second shot I’m going to be trying to get that ball on the green. There’s not really too much else going on.”
Scheffler was also asked about his pursuit of a career grand slam, a feat only six golfers (Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy) have accomplished. Scheffler told reporters, “Yeah, it would be nice, but I’m not going to be thinking about that tonight. I’m going to be going home, trying to get some rest and get some recovery and then get ready for tomorrow.”
With Scheffler’s victory at The Open, he will need only the U.S. Open to join the list of career grand slam winners. Next year’s U.S. Open will be played in June at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. Scheffler, 29, who turned pro in 2020, has been at the top of the world rankings since 2022 and now has four major championship victories and 22 career professional wins. He was the 2024 FedExCup Playoffs winner and won a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics.
