The New York Mets lineup for a matchup against the Colorado Rockies on Monday, May 4, will not include left-hander David Peterson.
Right-hander Huascar Brazoban will start for the Mets, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Peterson is an option to work in bulk relief. The veteran was pounded for seven earned runs in his last outing, a blowout loss to the Washington Nationals. It was his first start following two appearances out of the bullpen.
The Mets are looking for their first win of the season against the Rockies. Colorado swept a three-game set at Citi Field near the end of April. Peterson did not pitch in that series.
New York Mets Lineup Update: Huascar Brazoban to Start Against Colorado Rockies, Not David Peterson
Peterson’s first outing of the season went well. He held the Pittsburgh Pirates scoreless across 5.1 innings. Since then, his season has gone downhill. The San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks both blasted Peterson for five earned runs to open April. The 30-year-old gave up four earned runs over five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers, pushing his ERA to 6.41. The Mets chose to bump Peterson to the bullpen after that outing.
After the role change, Peterson showed signs of life. He delivered 3.2 scoreless frames in an extra-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs. The lefty earned a hold against the Minnesota Twins by tossing 3.1 innings of one-run ball. Peterson returned to the rotation after back-to-back solid showings, but immediately regressed to his previous poor performance. The Nationals jumped on him for two runs in the first inning. Peterson appeared to be settling in, only to melt down in the fourth inning. Washington sent 11 men to the plate, scoring seven runs. A bases-loaded walk to James Wood sealed Peterson’s evening.
Peterson was a key member of New York’s rotation for the first half of 2025. He carried a mid-2.00s ERA well into June. The lefty earned an All-Star selection and picked up a hold in the All-Star game. Peterson struggled mightily to close the season. He posted a 6.68 ERA across six outings in August. September was even worse, as Peterson was crushed for 18 earned runs in 16.2 innings. He played a crucial role in the late-season collapse that cost the Mets a playoff spot.
Where Can the Mets Turn For Rotation Help?
The Mets rank 15th in starting pitcher ERA. Nolan McLean and Clay Holmes are doing the heavy lifting, while offseason acquisition Freddy Peralta has provided decent contributions. Outside of the top three in the rotation, the unit has struggled. Kodai Senga permitted 20 earned runs in 20 innings, then hit the injured list with a spine injury. Sean Manaea has a 6.55 ERA as a long reliever. Like Peterson, he also faded down the stretch in 2025. Christian Scott has been just fine over two outings.
As the big-league club scuffles, the buzz for Jonah Tong will only grow louder. The 22-year-old right-hander has a massive 32.8% strikeout rate through seven starts at Triple-A. Tong’s big-league debut didn’t go well in 2025, but he remains one of the top prospects in the organization.
