The Giants are being predicted to sign Ranger Suarez.

With just seven weeks remaining in MLB’s offseason, top free agents around the league are going to have to decide where their next home will be for the 2026 season. For the New York Mets, it is expected that some of their biggest moves are ahead, and they’ve been rumored and linked to nearly every high-profile free agent.

The Mets are thought to be heavily in the market for a starting pitcher this winter, as their current rotation consists of Clay Holmes and David Peterson as top frontline arms. However, a recent report indicates that it feels almost like a guarantee that New York will land either Ranger Suarez or Framber Valdez.

ESPN Insider Believes Mets Will Land Either Framber Valdez or Ranger Suarez

According to ESPN insider Buster Olney, it feels inevitable that the Mets will land either Framber Valdez or Ranger Suarez this offseason.

Both Suarez and Valdez are the top remaining starters on the market, so it makes sense that Mets fans would feel pulled right back into the hopes of this 2026 team being successful if they break the bank for one of these southpaws.

The Mets are certainly comfortable with their young options like Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat, but the end to the 2025 season was so disastrous from a starting pitching standpoint that, as Olney reports, the inevitability of adding another frontline starter is imminent.

New York has lost more than it’s gained this offseason, with franchise favorites Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz walking out the door, and Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil being traded.

However, in that same breath, something didn’t seem right within the Mets’ clubhouse walls, and this cleaning of house could actually be a positive sign for the team from Queens.

Which Starter Would Fit the Mets the Best?

Ranger Suarez has a lot of experience within the NL East, as he’s spent his entire career with the Phillies, but Valdez is certainly the more productive pitcher in terms of career accolades and statistics.

Which means Valdez will come at a higher price, likely in the $120-150 million range, and possibly even higher if his market is drawn out longer.

As for Suarez, he too will be signed on at least a $20 million AAV deal, but the reports about his free agency indicate teams around MLB don’t want to sign him for 5+ years.

Here is Framber Valdez’s 2025 stats: 3.66 ERA, 192 IP, 187 SO, 3.37 FIP

Here is Ranger Suarez’s 2025 stats: 3.20 ERA, 157.1 IP, 151 SO, 3.21 FIP

Both starters are very familiar, and the Mets will be happy with either one, but the price point between Valdez and Suarez plays a huge factor in each of their markets.
