David Stearns could make a big splash this offseason by signing Cody Bellinger.

The New York Mets introduced new acquisition Bo Bichette in an introductory press conference on Wednesday, as the team formally announced the three-year, $126 million contract for Bichette. This introductory press conference also gave the New York media access to Mets GM David Stearns, who revealed what the remaining offseason plans are for the Mets and how close they may be to acquiring another star player.

Although it’s early in the year, the New York Mets have been one of the most active teams in baseball in terms of transactions, which is somewhat expected considering how important it has been for the Mets to replace Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz. They’ve done so, in some respect, by adding Jorge Polanco, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams via free agency.

Mets David Stearns Speaks With Media

The biggest question remaining for the Mets this offseason is how/when they will add a starting pitcher.

David Stearns answered questions from the media at Bichette’s press conference. Here’s what he said about adding starter help:

“My preference is to add a starting pitcher. I’ve been open and honest about that through the entirety of the offseason. I can’t say with certainty we’re going to be able to do that, but we remain engaged in many fronts of that market. We still have plenty of time in the offseason and plenty of time before Opening Day.”

Some of those external options that Stearns may be talking about include Zac Gallen, Chris Bassitt, Lucas Giolito, and Zack Littell.

What Else Did David Stearns Say?

Among various other things, David Stearns was also asked about the outfield outlook after trading for Luis Robert Jr.

In what Mets fans may not like to hear, Stearns said he feels good about their position group (in the outfield) heading into the season, but they “never stop looking”.

The press conference was focused on the massive deal handed out to Bo Bichette.

It is expected that Bo Bichette will play third base in 2026, which is a position he is uncomfortable with. That position change will be one of the biggest early storylines in the Mets’ season.

Stearns thinks that adding Bichette, who is a primary shortstop, will help with range in the infield:

“We’re essentially going to have four shortstops in the infield. It’s going to help with range. With Bo, we’re talking about someone who understands the game, has a great work ethic, and he believes he will get there very fast.”
