Mets Predicted to Trade Away Key Player in Latest Bold Move

The New York Mets are not expected to be done making bold moves this offseason. After a slow start to the winter, New York has rejuvenated its roster thanks to three huge deals in just two days. The club first shocked many around the league by signing free agent Bo Bichette to a massive $126 million contract. They then acquired outfielder Luis Robert Jr. and Freddy Peralta in blockbuster trades.

All three moves help fill positional needs for the Mets. Nevertheless, the Bichette deal essentially opens the door for another move. With Francisco Lindor at shortstop and Marcus Semien at second base, the former Blue Jay will be New York’s starting third baseman on opening day. This is despite Bichette having never played the position in his professional career.

As Bichette arrives in New York, the Mets now need to figure out what to do with Brett Baty. The former 2023 number two prospect in the organization was the team’s main starter at the hot corner in 2025. There have been some suggestions that the Mets could move Baty to left field. The slugger, however, last played more than a game in the position during a 2022 stint in the minor leagues.

Instead of playing two players out of position, ESPN is predicting that New York ultimately trades Baty. According to the outlet, the Mets would make the move to help replenish their farm system. Due to previous deals, the club has traded away seven of its top 15 prospects from the 2024 rankings.

New York Mets Could Swap Brett Baty for Prospect, Reliever

ESPN believes that the Mets could find a perfect trade partner with the Seattle Mariners. The American League team has been heavily linked with potential trades for second basemen Brendan Donovan and Nico Hoerner during the offseason. Nevertheless, as ESPN’s David Schoenfield pointed out, Baty would be a better fit for Seattle.

At the moment, Ben Williamson is projected to be the starting third baseman on opening day for the Mariners. Williamson, however, only managed to hit one home run and posted a lackluster .310 SLG% in 85 games with the club in 2025. Baty is a substantial upgrade at the position for Seattle. The current Met hit 18 homers while putting up a .435 SLG% with New York in the most recent season.

In dealing Baty to Seattle, ESPN predicts the Mets would land Jurrangelo Cijntje and Matt Brash. Cijntje is one of the most interesting prospects in baseball because he is an ambidextrous pitcher. Brash, on the other hand, has excelled in the big leagues as a reliever. The former fourth-round pick in 2019 has 165 strikeouts in his last 117 innings coming out of the bullpen.

Baty’s Future in New York Needs to be Addressed

Potentially trading away Baty could be risky for the Mets. After all, he was regarded as a top prospect before making his major league debut. However, the Bichette deal basically forces New York’s hand in the situation.

Bleacher Report also recently claimed that sorting out Baty’s future is now the team’s top priority heading towards 2026. While losing the slugger could sting, grabbing a top phenom and reliable bullpen help in the deal would ease the team’s pain.
