Matthew Brash: Breaking News

Brash (lat) will throw a bullpen session Monday, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. It will be the first time he's thrown from the bump since he landed on the 15-day injured list at the beginning of May with right lat inflammation. Brash is eligible for activation from the IL on Friday and has a chance to return on that date, though the Mariners might want to have him make a rehab appearance or two first.

Brash (lat) began playing catch Tuesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. It's the first time Brash has done any kind of throwing since he landed on the injured list Friday with right lat inflammation. A clearer timeline for his return may begin to take shape once he progresses to throwing off a mound.

The Mariners placed Brash on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Thursday, due to right lat inflammation. Brash sustained the injury during Wednesday's outing against the Twins, when he tweaked his lat while tossing two pitches in the eighth inning. While the MRI didn't reveal any structural damage, the injury is significant enough for him to warrant a stint on the IL. A minimum stay on the IL would mean a mid-May return for Brash, but some lat injuries take longer to heal from, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander shelved until the end of the month or early June. Left-hander Josh Simpson was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move.
