The New York Mets are coming off of an epic second-half collapse that ultimately cost them their spot in the postseason in 2025. They also lost Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz in free agency.
However, they still managed to add some good players such as Marcus Semien, Luke Weaver, Bo Bichette and Devin Williams. They still look like a strong team heading into 2026, and they should be right in the thick of the race for the National League East.
The favorites to win the World Series will be the Los Angeles Dodgers, but Eno Sarris of The Athletic made a bold prediction, that New York will ride their pitching depth to their first World Series appearance since 2015.
“Using OOPSY projections from FanGraphs, this looks at all starters not in the top five for their teams who are projected to start at least three games in 2026,” Sarris wrote. “With Sean Manaea, Jonah Tong, Tobias Myers, Christian Scott and Jonathan Pintaro, the Mets have the best depth by projected strikeouts minus walks (and ERA, but there are park factors in those). Even if Manaea’s velocity is down and Tong’s spring wasn’t grand, Myers is a young capable veteran, and Scott has shown why everyone loved him before surgery.”
New York Mets predicted to make deep October run
Again, the popular pick is the Dodgers. But the Mets shouldn’t be counted out. They have a lot of starting pitching depth. They acquired Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers and also have Nolan McLean coming back from the World Baseball Classic to rejoin the team. Plus, Kodai Senga
As long as the Mets don’t run into a lot of injury issues, they should be in good shape. Peralta will be the leader of the rotation, but the Mets have so many other options in case something goes wrong.
Manaea is a bounce-back candidate after a tough 2025 season, and there are a lot of young pitchers in the mix. Unfortunately, the Peralta trade cost them Brandon Sproat, but that’s a loss the Mets can manage now that Peralta is leading the rotation.
Last season, they didn’t have a true ace, which Peralta is. With him at the top, the Mets have a much better chance to make a deep run into October. They reached the National League Championship Series in 2024, but were unable to follow that up with more success in 2025.
But 2026 could be different for them after making some big moves.
Can Mets pull off World Series run?
Because the Dodgers are stacked with such talent, taking them down is going to be a tall task, so the Mets actually getting to the World Series might be a longshot. But it is always possible.
The pitching has improved a lot, and they managed to replace the players they lost with some stars that should help them at least stay in contention. If everything goes according to plan, then the Mets could very well find themselves competing in the World Series for the first time in over a decade.
