The New York Yankees lost 4-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday after winning the first game of their three-game series.
On Sunday, the Yankees will attempt to take the rubber match as left-hander Carlos Rodón takes the mound in just his second start since returning from a monthlong stint on the injured list.
Before the game, the Yankees announced a pair of significant decisions with their pitching staff, as a previously reliable member of the starting rotation will head to the injured list.
That pitcher is Ryan Weathers. The left-hander walked off the mound Saturday in the fourth inning, one out into a Myles Straw at-bat, after firing a 78 mph sweeper that clearly bothered him. Manager Aaron Boone and a trainer came out to check on him. He skipped his warm-up tosses and left the field for imaging.
New York placed Weathers on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm flexor strain and recalled right-hander Brendan Beck from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the vacant roster spot.
The Yankees made the announcement on the team’s social media channels before 11 a.m. Sunday morning.

Ryan Weathers’ Injury History Raises Concern
New York had already stretched Weathers well past his career workload. He entered Saturday’s start at a career-high 137 1/3 innings pitched, blowing past the 126 2/3 he threw across the majors and minors combined with the San Diego Padres in 2022, according to ESPN stats.
Weathers had quietly turned into one of the steadiest arms in the rotation, posting a 1.94 ERA over seven starts according to Bryan Hoch go MLB.com. He finished his abbreviated Saturday outing having allowed two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks across 3 1/3 innings, dropping his record to 5-7 with a 3.60 ERA in 25 starts.
“He has been incredible for us the whole year. Obviously, we’re hoping for good news. Hopefully he doesn’t miss any time. We’re saying some prayers, for sure,” said catcher Austin Wells, as quoted by MLB.com.
New York acquired Weathers from the Miami Marlins over the winter, betting on a former seventh overall pick who had never once cracked 95 innings in a season. Forearm and lat trouble limited him to just eight starts a season ago, and a finger injury cost him roughly two and a half months in 2024. A flexor strain covers a wide range of outcomes, and the Yankees have not put a timetable on his return.
Brendan Beck Steps Into the Yankees’ Pitching Puzzle

Beck, 27, is no stranger to the shuttle between the Bronx and Scranton-Wilkes Barre. The Stanford product and 2021 second-round pick has already made two brief big league appearances this season, debuting May 7 as a bulk reliever against the Texas Rangers, according to NBC Sports, before a spot start against the Minnesota Twins on July 4.
Neither outing went smoothly, leaving him with a 9.45 ERA across 6 2/3 career innings. His Triple-A résumé tells a different story. Beck carries a 2.75 ERA with 133 strikeouts over 121 innings across 22 starts this year for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, according to MiLB.com, numbers that have made him one of the system’s more dependable arms. He is the younger brother of San Francisco Giants pitcher Tristan Beck.
