Baltimore Ravens' rookie head coach Jesse Minter sent second-year defensive tackle Aeneas Peebles a message about his battle to earn a roster spot.

He didn’t live up his billing as a draft steal in 2025, and Aeneas Peebles got a major update about his chances of sticking with the Baltimore Ravens this year from new head coach Jesse Minter.

The rookie boss addressed defensive tackle Peebles’ future after the 13-3 win over the Minnesota Vikings in preseason on Saturday, August 22. Minter told reporters Peebles “has some playmaking instincts. [He’s] got some ability. Whenever we move him and things like that, he’s really effective. I think he’s just keeping his head down, working. When guys sit there and don’t count the number of bodies at their position, [they] make it a really hard decision.”

Two things stand out from Minter’s statement. First, how he outlined a clear use plan for unleashing Peebles’ potential as a game-wrecker.

The Ravens weren’t able to unlock Peebles during his rookie year, but Minter is indicating the second-year lineman will attack from multiple alignments in a new scheme. Minter’s show of faith in the player selected in the sixth round of last year’s NFL draft has been reflected by Peebles working a lot with starters this offseason.

That work continued when Peebles ran with the starting unit against the Vikings, but Minter acknowledged competition for roster spots remains congested and intense along the interior of the defensive line.

Aeneas Peebles Getting Second Chance at Breakout Season

Peebles never managed to step up as a rookie, but he’s getting an extended second chance to be a breakout player in Year 2. The 24-year-old is making the most of his opportunities by putting together “a preseason that has featured several splash plays,” according to Geoffrey A. Knox of Ravens Wire.

Splash plays eluded Peebles against the Vikings, when he registered just two combined tackles. Yet, the former Virginia State standout was unmistakable as a more active disruptor.

Peebles was credited with four pressures by The Baltimore Banner’s Jonas Shaffer. Those pressures continued a recent hot streak of putting consistent heat on the pocket.

Big No. 90 also gave the Philadelphia Eagles’ problems during the Ravens’ first exhibition game. Peebles used “a nice cross-chop to power” pass-rush move highlighted by NFL analyst Chris Cooper. He noted Peebles “would have gotten home if he wasn’t held.”

Getting after the passer isn’t the only way Peebles is making an impact. The 6-foot, 300-pounder‘s using his low centre of gravity and wide base to be a force against the run. Like on this play in Minnesota, highlighted by Ravens film analyst Cole Jackson.

Peebles is starting to look like the late-round find the Ravens thought they snagged just over a year ago. His rise is timely while Minter been handling multiple injuries at the D-tackle spots.

Ravens Counting on Health for Deep Defensive Tackle Rotation

Minter is finally seeing the end in sight to what was a brewing injury crisis at a key position. He’s already teased the imminent return to full capacity of two-time Pro Bowler Nnamdi Madubuike.

The latter is the most dynamic force for the Ravens up front, but Madubuike needs help. He’ll get it once hulking nose tackle Travis Jones is 100 percent, alongside 39-year-old six-time Pro Bowler Calais Campbell.

This trio is key to the Ravens’ defensive line living up to its top-10 billing. The headline group still needs quality depth, and Peebles can provide it next to ageing nose guard John Jenkins and veteran Broderick Washington Jr.

There’s still room for more quality rotational linemen, provided everybody gets healthy. Including an “ascending” interior people-mover who can play over the ball.

Peebles works better closer to the edges, where his main competition is this year’s seventh-round pick Rayshaun Benny. The ex-Michigan stud boasts draft steal potential, but Peebles can stay ahead.

Provided he heeds Minter’s words about scheme fit and staying focused on his performances.
