The Buffalo Bills will take on the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football, and both teams’ quarterbacks are heading in different directions.
Buffalo’s quarterback, Josh Allen, is coming off an MVP season and looks like the best quarterback in the NFL over the first two games of the season. Miami’s quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had a rough stretch over the past year, losing the first two games of the season.
Allen has the chance to put up crazy numbers on a Dolphins defense that has allowed over 30 points in its first two games, and NFL Spin Zone’s Ryan Heckman thinks Allen will rush for more yards than Tagovailoa throws for on Thursday night.
“This matchup is set up perfectly for something wild like this to actually happen,” Heckman wrote Tuesday. The Bills have the league’s top passing defense through two weeks and are giving up just 124.0 yards per game.
Meanwhile, Josh Allen’s career-high in rushing yards (135) did, in fact, come against the Dolphins back in 2018. With Miami being a bottom-8 team against the run, look for Allen to go wild and, well, the Dolphins continue being a mess.
Josh Allen Won’t Rush For More Yards Than Tua Throws For
It’s a stretch to say that Allen will rush for more yards than Tagovailoa throws for, since Allen has only rushed for 89 yards this season. In comparison, Tagovailoa threw for over 300 yards last week in a loss to the New England Patriots.
Tagovailoa would need to have the worst game of his NFL career for Allen to rush for more yards than he throws; it’s unlikely to happen. However, the Bills‘ defense did get after New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields last week, only throwing for 27 yards before leaving late in the game with a concussion.
Tagovailoa has proven to be a better quarterback than Fields in his career, so throwing for only 27 yards isn’t going to happen on Thursday night.
Tagovailoa Has Great Respect For Allen
Although both quarterbacks are rivals on the field, Tagovailoa speaks highly of Allen, noting what a great player he is.
“Dude, he’s top tier. If it’s not with his arm, it’s with his legs. That dude can do literally anything he wants,” Tagovailoa told reporters Tuesday.
Tagovailoa is correct that Allen can do virtually anything on the field. Allen has the option to stay in the pocket and throw the ball or run and gain 20 yards.
Although Allen hasn’t yet played in a Super Bowl, many people regard him as the best quarterback in the NFL due to his exceptional skill set, surpassing that of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has three rings.
Allen will one day reach the Super Bowl and hold the Vince Lombardi Trophy, and that journey could begin tonight with a win over the Dolphins. Another victory would bring them one step closer to securing the No. 1 seed in the AFC, which could provide home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
