Jaguars Defense Catalysts 26-21 Win Over 49ers

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense once again proved to be the engine behind their success, leading the way in a 26-21 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. In a matchup that tested both physicality and discipline, the Jaguars’ relentless ability to take the ball away proved to be the deciding factor.

Opportunistic Defense Leads the Way

Linebacker Devin Lloyd was everywhere on the field, finishing with eight combined tackles and two interceptions. His instincts and anticipation repeatedly shut down San Francisco’s rhythm. This forced Brock Purdy into mistakes that Jacksonville was quick to capitalize on. Lloyd credited the defense’s success to their preparation.

“Yeah I mean, I think it starts in practice.” Llyod said on Sunday. “You know, we always practice taking the ball away—punching the ball out, catching the ball. Everybody always has the ball in their mind and I think whenever you’re thinking about it all the time, naturally, you know those plays and those opportunities, you’ll be ready for them whenever they present themselves.”

Foye Oluokun also played a pivotal role, posting seven combined tackles and forcing a fumble that halted a critical San Francisco drive. Former 49er Arik Armstead sealed the game late, delivering a sack-fumble on Purdy that crushed any hopes of a comeback for his former team. For Armstead, the moment carried added weight.

“Can’t write a better script than that to be honest,” Armstead said after the game. “I didn’t want to make it bigger than it was and just live in the moment and see what today had to bring. It was a pretty special day. Probably one I won’t forget.”

A Culture of Takeaways

The numbers show just how different this Jacksonville defense looks compared to last season. In all of 2024, the Jaguars forced only nine total takeaways. Just four weeks into 2025, they already have 13, averaging 3.3 per game—ranking first in the NFL.

Lloyd emphasized the unit’s collective mindset. “Yeah we’re uh very opportunistic. You know we have a lot of ball hawks on the defense and the ball’s always on our mind and you know, it starts up front and I think everybody just capitalizes on the opportunities that we have.”

Head coach Liam Coen praised his defenders for their consistency in practice, which translates to Sundays.

“It’s one of those things that right now it’s coming in bunches, which is awesome. But like I kind of said to these guys on Saturday morning, it’s not just happening,” Coen explained on Sunday. “There was a play in practice on Friday that it was just a run and there were five or six guys punching at the ball. You know it’s what they’re doing every single day. It’s how they’re being coached. Campy and his staff have done a phenomenal job detailing ball disruption, but these guys are being intentional about it. The way they’re practicing, the way that they’re preaching it, the way that they’re holding each other accountable—it shows up on the tape.”

Offense Still Searching for More

While the defense headlined the win, quarterback Trevor Lawrence recognized there is still room for offensive growth. He threw for 174 yards and one touchdown, but pointed out that the offense hasn’t reached its ceiling yet.

“It was a complete game for us,” Lawrence said on Sunday. “Offensively obviously there’s a lot more out there that we can do. That’s the great thing about it. We’re finding ways to win and we still feel like we can grow a lot as an offense.”

Looking Ahead

Through four games, the Jaguars’ identity has become clear—this defense is relentless, opportunistic, and determined to set the tone each week. With Devin Lloyd, Foye Oluokun, and Arik Armstead leading the charge, Jacksonville’s ability to take the ball away has become its greatest weapon.

If the defense continues on this pace, the Jaguars will remain one of the toughest teams in the NFL to put away. And as their offense grows into form, Jacksonville’s formula for winning looks more sustainable than ever.
