A potential reunion between the Kansas City Chiefs and wide receiver Tyreek hill has been heavily speculated about over the past several months.

When it became clear that Hill wasn’t happy with the Miami Dolphins, the possibility of the team cutting him became apparent. It intensified when Hill sustained a severe left knee injury, tearing his ACL and other ligaments.

The Dolphins released Hill last week, making him an unrestricted free agent. Him returning to Kansas City makes sense for both sides, but the knee injury complicates things. While speaking to members of the local media on Friday, coach Andy Reid addressed the rumors of Hill potentially rejoining the Chiefs.

Andy Reid Says There Has Been No Communication Between the Kansas City Chiefs and WR Tyreek Hill

“We go through everything and everybody,” Reid said when asked how the team evaluates bringing former players back. “That’s how Brett (Chiefs general manager Brett Veach) does it. I don’t even know if Tyreek is healthy right now to do anything. I’m sure he’s working hard on that part of it, trying to get that all straightened out. We talk about everything. There’s nothing happening there. We know what you know. He’s out there cranking away and trying to get himself back to where he can play, period.”

Reid is certainly not going to tip the Chiefs’ plans, but it stands to reason that they wouldn’t be in any hurry to sign Hill. There is a long way to go in the recovery process for Hill, meaning he could remain a free agent for quite sometime. It is very possible, even likely, that Hill will miss a significant portion of the 2026 season.

Reunion Between Chiefs and Hill Shouldn’t Be off the Table

Hill returning to Kansas City still has legs, even if it isn’t imminent. The Chiefs have a lot of uncertainty at the wide receiver position, thanks in large part to Rashee Rice’s legal trouble. If Rice ends up missing time due to another suspension, it would be great for them to plug Hill back in since he already knows the offensive system.

Even if Hill isn’t ready to play until late in the season, it would worth bringing him back. However, if Hill is serious about making a full recovery and wanting to play several more years, it may be in his best interest to take the year off. Still, it wouldn’t be out of the question for him joining the Chiefs in 2027.

Another factor will be what the Chiefs do at wide receiver in the meantime. If they opt for another veteran or invest a high draft pick at the position, interest in Hill returning may die down. Regardless of how it plays out, Hill will go down as one of the best receivers in franchise history. He ranks fifth in team history in receiving yards with 6,630, fourth in receptions with 479, and fourth in touchdowns with 56.
