The Minnesota Vikings are coming off a disappointing season and face significant questions about their roster, including at one of the game’s most important positions when it comes to quarterback play–wide receiver–with Jalen Nailor.
Nailor has long been a coaching staff darling. He has been able to put the talent they saw on display on the field more in recent seasons.
The timing could work in Nailor’s favor, while his play is a veritable wake-up call for the Vikings.
Vikings Have Key Decision to Make on Jalen Nailor

J.J. McCarthy and his future with the Vikings have drawn attention, but their complement of playmakers could also look very different next season. The Vikings could part ways with running back Aaron Jones and tight end T.J. Hockenson amid financial constraints.
And then, there is Nailor’s wide receiver position, which has been a strength,
“The assumption has long been that Nailor would depart as a free agent rather than bloat their cap structure at the position,” ESPN’s Kevin Seifert wrote on January 28. “Justin Jefferson is due to earn an average of $35 million in each of the next three seasons, and No. 2 receiver Jordan Addison — a first-round pick in 2023 — is now eligible for a contract extension.
“Addison being arrested Jan. 12 and charged with misdemeanor trespassing, although the charges were later dropped, is a reminder that letting Nailor leave is not without risk. In his three-year career, Addison has missed three games because of an NFL suspension, two games because of injury and a quarter of another game as discipline for missing a walk-through practice.”
Nailor, who turns 27 in March, was the No. 191 overall pick of the 2022 draft. He has 57 receptions for 858 yards and 10 touchdowns over the past two seasons.
Jalen Nailor Developed Into ‘Coaches’ Favorite’

He posted a 29-444-4 line, starting a career-high eight games, in 2025 while playing in all 17 regular-season contests for the second straight season.
Nailor has also been a reliable contributor in critical moments.
“Nailor is nearing the end of his best and possibly last Vikings season. The fast receiver, nicknamed “Speedy,” has developed an all-around game and made impactful plays,” the Star Tribune’s Andrew Krammer wrote in December 2025. “Nailor has been a go-to target in clutch situations with reliable hands and home run-play ability.”
“Nailor’s rise in Minnesota required him to learn each receiver spot — the slot (F), split end (X) and flanker (Z) — for a Vikings playbook chock full of varied formations and motions. While he has been mostly a slot target, his versatility has made him a coaches’ favorite.”
Jefferson is intrigued by Nailor’s future after seeing him develop daily over the past few seasons. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell raved about Nailor.
The only question is whether or not the Vikings can afford him, or to lose him, for that matter.
Nailor is coming off a four-year, $3.8 million contract. Spotrac projects Nailor could command a contract worth up to $9.5 million over two years. The Vikings are $48.9 million in the red, per Over The Cap.
Whatever the Vikings do with Nailor or the rest of their roster, getting their finances in order is going to be paramount to success going forward.
