The New York Giants faced a bit of a scare at Friday’s training camp practice when several players got banged up during live scrimmages and drills, including second-year running back Cam Skattebo.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, who is in attendance at camp in West Virginia, shared details on Skattebo, center John Michael Schmitz, and edge Brian Burns.
“RB Cam Skattebo went down after a collision with LB Arvell Reese. He was stretching his left leg and didn’t return to practice but remained on sideline,” wrote Raanan.
“C John Michael Schmitz walked off early in practice after taking hard hit. OLB Brian Burns also got banged up but didn’t appear serious.”
While you never want to see players get hurt, especially before the season even begins, Giants fans can take a deep breath as it appears all of the aforementioned players will be okay.
John Harbaugh Provides Update on Injured Giants
After practice, New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh gave a brief update on Skattebo, Schmitz, and Burns, and reiterated that nobody was seriously harmed at Friday’s practice.
“John Harbaugh said JMS hit his head/got his bell rung. Skattebo just part of working back from last year’s injury but nothing serious. Brian Burns played some but is managing an ankle,” wrote the New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard.
It’s certainly a good update that no Giant will be missing any major practice time in the coming weeks, as all three players will be key starters for New York in 2026.
Skattebo in particular seems to still be getting reacclimated to the speed of the NFL. After all, he missed the second half of his rookie season and will likely need some reps throughout camp and the preseason to be 100% ready for Week 1.
Arvell Reese Impresses With Big Hit on Cam Skattebo
If there’s one positive thing New York Giants fans can take away from Skattebo’s near-injury, it’s the fact that it came on a monstrous play from first-round rookie Arvell Reese.
NorthJersey.com’s Art Stapleton detailed the series of events in a post on X.
“Arvell Reese is the total package. Brings it old school. Popped Cam Skattebo in a run fit + the oohs/aahs were audible,” wrote Stapleton.
“Next play Reese ran down Skatt from back side behind line. Skatt was slow to get up. Did a lot of stretching on side before walking across to other sideline.”
One constant throughout Giants training camp thus far has been the emergence of Reese and how fast he seems to be adapting to the high-level of the NFL.
The fifth overall pick in this past April’s draft, the former Ohio State standout figures to wear multiple hats for the Giants defense this upcoming season.
It seems he’ll primarily serve as a weakside linebacker, serving as the sidekick to Tremaine Edmunds.
But thanks to his special physical abilities, there will be instances where new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson will be able to send him as a pass rusher, an area he thrived at in college.
Let’s just hope he refrains from laying the boom on any more Giants teammates.
