The New York Jets, despite having low expectations in 2025, found a way to underachieve.
In the first year of Aaron Glenn’s tenure as the head coach, New York finished 3-14 and was swept by the AFC East, 6-0.
Five of the six losses were by 10 points or more.
With the gap feeling wider than ever in their own division, Glenn must find a way to turn things around in 2026, or he’ll likely be searching for a new job in 2027.
But what can the former player-turned-coach do to turn around a Jets team that has gone more than 10 years without a winning season, and 15 years without a playoff appearance?
Willie Colon Reveals What Aaron Glenn Must Do to Turn Around the Jets
Following the New York Jets season-ending loss to the Buffalo Bills second-stringers, former offensive lineman Willie Colon shared what Glenn has to fix as he heads into his second season as head coach.
“I mean, a big part of this season, you saw guys go rogue on tape, right? Because they either trying to get their stats or they were trying to find their way or audition for another team because they knew they weren’t going to be here,” Colon told his co-hosts.
“Two, internally, you know, you went and got (Steve) Wilks. A lot of these guys on your staff, these are your guys. You now have to comb through them and see if they even qualified…So I think he has to, one – we talked about – do some self-reflection, but he has to do some internal auditing, right? Because that’s important. It doesn’t matter the talent you have on the field.”
To Colon’s delight, there will be changes coming to Glenn’s coaching staff.
Of course, there will be a new defensive coordinator in 2026. Steve Wilks was fired and replaced by Chris Harris, but there will likely be a permanent replacement announced in the coming weeks.
On offense, first-time offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand is expected to remain in place, but ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported that changes could be made to his surrounding staff.
“Coordinator Tanner Engstrand doesn’t appear to be in danger, but it makes sense to add a coach with experience in developing quarterbacks,” wrote Cimini.
“Current QBs coach Charles London, a former running backs coach, doesn’t have an extensive background with quarterbacks.”
Connor Rogers Struggles to See Aaron Glenn’s Path Forward
While there should be hope that Glenn can figure out how to spearhead a turnaround, SNY’s Connor Rogers is having a tough time seeing that outcome come to fruition.
“He’s trying to get people to believe and buy in, but after this last month what can you say? Hope. Woody Johnson has to be sitting there and thinking, ‘I hope this gets better next year,’ because what tangible things can you hold onto right now that we saw on the football field?” Rogers asked his co-hosts.
“I’m not saying he has no chance of figuring this thing out and fixing it. But I don’t have an equation for you here of telling you why it’s going to happen and clearly, neither does he right now.”
There isn’t any evidence to suggest that Glenn is the guy to fix the Jets after years of turmoil and dysfunction.
But considering he appears to be safe and not going anywhere anytime soon, all fans can do is hope.
