Eagles’ Nick Sirianni Sends Strong Message to 49ers’ Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy got Nick Sirianni's attention on Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy extinguished the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl repeat hopes, and Purdy won nothing but respect in the process.

Purdy threw a game-winning 4-yard touchdown pass to running back Christian McCaffrey as the 49ers unseated the defending champion Eagles, 23-19, on Sunday in the Wild Card round. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had a simple but strong message for Purdy afterward at midfield.

“Good game. Go win it all, alright,” Sirianni told Purdy.

San Francisco will have a herculean task next in the No. 1 seed Seattle Seahawks on the road with a short week. The 49ers split the regular season series with the Seahawks, but Seattle won the most recent meeting, 13-3, in Week 18.

If San Francisco gets past the Seahawks, it could be another NFC West rival around the corner in the Los Angeles Rams or the No. 2 seed Chicago Bears. The 49ers will play on the road either way, but the Niners will be at home in the Super Bowl — if the team makes it that far — since the game is at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Kyle Shanahan Pleased With Brock Purdy Turnaround

Things weren’t all pretty for the 49ers quarterback as he threw two interceptions during the game.

Purdy went 18-31 for 262 yards and two touchdowns versus two interceptions. He also ran for 24 yards on nine carries, and he only took one sack for a 5-yard loss.

“Brock had a couple mistakes, obviously, with his two picks and stuff, but to come back on that last drive and get us in the end zone, lead us all the way down there,” Shanahan told reporters afterward. “And get to like the third guy in his progression on the touchdown, real proud of the guys.”

Purdy led a game-winning drive of 10 plays, 66 yards, with his team down 19-17 in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia had just bounced back with a 33-yard field goal by kicker Jake Elliott after the 49ers’ previous go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Brock Purdy: ‘Still There to Go Take’

San Francisco used some razzle-dazzle to grab the lead in the fourth quarter when wide receiver Jauan Jennings, a former college quarterback, completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey, 17-16.

With the Eagles answering on a 47-yard drive in eight plays, it didn’t faze Purdy and company with eight minutes left on the road in Philly. It also didn’t faze Purdy that his last throw was an interception that set up the Eagles with good field position for Elliott to just go 47 yards and retake the lead.

“The game is still there to go take,” Purdy told reporters afterward. “I was just being real with myself and leaning into my faith and understanding that I’ve got to hold all this loosely, but try to go do God’s will. And that’s every drive.”

“Same thing happened at the end of the game. We needed to go do it. I just kept my mind fresh and go play one play at a time, every play has a life of its own, and still have that attack mentality every single play. That’s how I did it,” he added.
