The Washington Commanders added some offensive playmakers this offseason. But the more firepower Washington is able to acquire, the better equipped quarterback Jayden Daniels will be to have a strong third NFL season.
With that in mind, USA Today’s Nate Davis argued the Commanders could make another offseason addition for their offensive — Stefon Diggs.
Davis named Washington one of the six teams that makes sense for the receiver in 2026.
“After what seems like a one-and-done relationship with free agent Deebo Samuel, they have very little established wideout experience behind Terry McLaurin, who’s coming off his worst NFL season,” wrote Davis. “Diggs, who hails from nearby Gaithersburg, Maryland, and attended the University of Maryland, would diversify and elevate this passing attack for third-year QB Jayden Daniels, whether or not 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk eventually lands here. And with nearly $50 million in available salary cap space, the Commanders could certainly afford to import Diggs better than most.”
Diggs is entering his 12th NFL season this fall. Last season with the New England Patriots, he had 85 catches, 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
According to Spotrac, Diggs has earned about $157.17 million during his NFL career.
How WR Stefon Diggs Could Fit With Commanders
Davis picking six potential landing spots for Diggs came a day after a jury in Dedham, Massachusetts found the receiver not guilty of strangulation and assault and battery charges in allegations from his former live-in chef.
It’s not clear if NFL teams were waiting for a resolution in Diggs’ legal issues or not. The Patriots more than likely released him this offseason because of his cap hit, not legal problems.
But with the court’s decision, Diggs can turn his entire focus back to football.
Last season, the wideout posted his seventh 1,000-yard campaign in the last eight years. During the lone year where he didn’t reach that milestone, Diggs only played eight games.
From 2020-22, he was one of the best receivers in the NFL while playing with the Buffalo Bills. Diggs led the league with 127 receptions and 1,535 receiving yards while scoring eight touchdowns during 2020.
Diggs will turn 33 years old in November. But on short-term deal, the veteran could give the Washington receiving corps a boost.
Washington’s Offseason Additions to Help Jayden Daniels
Pundits have continued to link the Commanders to free agent receivers because the team might not have adequately filled the vacancy left from Deebo Samuel’s departure this offseason.
The Commanders still have Terry McLaurin, and they drafted receiver Antonio Williams in the third round. But Samuel led the team with 727 receiving yards last season.
In 2026 NFL free agency, Washington signed veterans Dynami Brown and Van Jefferson. The team also landed promising tight end Chig Okonkwo on a 3-year contract.
But the Commanders could still use another reliable receiver such as Diggs. Even at his age, Diggs also presents more big-play upside than those other veterans.
If the Commanders don’t add another wideout this offseason, they will be counting on Luke McCaffrey and Treylon Burks contributing more. While that’s possible, it’s a risky move to trust those two wideouts will produce a lot this fall.
The Commanders also have Ja’Corey Brooks, Jacoby Jones, Jaylin Lane, and Nick Nash on their offseason roster.
